Thudarum: NOT Shobana but Jyothika was first choice for Mohanlal’s upcoming crime drama?

In a surprising twist, it’s revealed that despite being renowned for their iconic collaboration in Manichitrathazhu and other films, Mohanlal and Shobana will be reuniting on screen after 15 years in the upcoming film Thudarum, but initially, she wasn’t the original choice of actress for this production.

In a recent chat with Red FM, filmmaker Tharun Moorthy shared that his team was uncertain about how to approach Shobana regarding the role of Lalitha in Thudarum. With this doubt lingering, they were prepared to explore the possibility of casting Jyothika for the part instead.

I, being a devoted admirer, had Shobana firmly in mind for the role of Lalitha. However, we faced uncertainty about reaching out to her. Consequently, we embarked on an exploration for alternatives, eventually settling on Jyothika.

Later on, the director reminisced about sharing the script with Jyothika, who found the story captivating. However, despite her enthusiasm for the project, Jyothika couldn’t participate in the filming due to a previously scheduled family trip around the world during that time frame.

As it happened, Tharun Moorthy mused aloud, “The thought that persisted in my mind was this: Couldn’t it be that Malayali viewers eagerly anticipate seeing Mohanlal and Shobana together again?

Regarding the movie, it has been announced that it will hit the big screen on April 25, 2025, following numerous disputes about its release date and multiple postponements.

In addition to Mohanlal and Shobana, the cast also includes Farhaan Faasil, Maniyanpilla Raju, Binu Pappu, Irshad Ali, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Thomas Mathew, Krishna Prabha, Prakash Varma, and Aravind.

As an ardent admirer, let me share that the captivating narrative of Thudarum is the masterful creation of K.R. Sunil. The enchanting music that resonates through the film’s scenes has been skillfully crafted by Jakes Bejoy. What makes this movie even more enticing is its production, a collaborative effort between Mohanlal’s esteemed Aashirvad Cinemas and the visionary minds at Rejaputhra Release.
