THROWBACK: When Rajinikanth was deeply insulted and thrown out by a producer who asked him his worth in being an actor

As a devoted admirer of Thalaiva, Rajinikanth, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of respect and awe when recalling his extraordinary journey. His life story is nothing short of a Hollywood blockbuster, filled with challenges, humiliation, and triumphs that would make even the strongest hearts quiver.

Known as Thalaiva, or the much-loved Rajinikanth, is a cinematic legend in India. The admiration he receives, which remains constant, is truly inspiring. Interestingly, there was an instance when a producer criticized him harshly, but surprisingly, this incident paved the way for one of his most significant victories.

Instead, let me share an inspiring account of the actor’s life journey that ultimately earned him the prestigious title of being a superstar.

Rajinikanth was once brutally insulted by a producer

Reflecting on the audio launch of Darbar in January 2020, I can’t help but reminisce about a moment from my past that transformed me into the superstar I am today. During that event, I found myself drifting back to the 1970s, a time when I was just starting out in the acting world. You see, it all began with an incident that, at first, left me feeling humiliated. However, little did I know then, this very experience would eventually catapult me to stardom.

In a vague reference, Rajinikanth disclosed that he had been enlisted for a specific production, where he was intended to portray a virtuous character. Earlier negotiations about his compensation had taken place, and it was decided that he would receive approximately Rs. 6000 for the role.

Yet, Rajinikanth requested the producer to provide an initial payment, serving as confirmation for his part. Regrettably, on the filming day itself, he hadn’t received this payment.

Reflecting further on that unforgettable event, I, an ardent admirer, recount how Rajinikanth himself disclosed that despite not receiving his due advance on the day of filming, he courageously contacted the producer, who promised him prompt payment.

However, no such event transpired, and instead, the Petta actor was instructed to head for makeup. Unwilling to continue without first receiving his upfront payment, he flatly declined.

In further discussion about the event, Rajinikanth stated, “The production manager informed me that the lead actor was present and suggested I get my makeup done. However, I declined. I made it clear that I would not move forward unless I received a thousand rupees first.”

Ultimately, the producer felt unimpressed by Rajinikanth’s request for upfront payment prior to makeup and took offense, causing deep insult. In fact, the producer, who had arrived in a luxurious Ambassador car, challenged Rajinikanth’s artistic value.

Rajinikanth stated, “He was extremely angry and demanded, ‘Are you a well-known actor or not? Since you’ve made a few movies, do you think you can skip makeup prep without notice? You lack professionalism. Leave.’ “

Following the occurrence, Rajinikanth found himself having to return home by foot as the producer declined to let him borrow his vehicle. During this walk, it was at this moment that the renowned star noticed how quickly people on the streets identified him and even called out lines from his most recent movie.

As Rajinikanth continued his story, he shared that he initially thought the crowd was making fun of him by repeating his lines on the street. But after this experience, he swore to himself that he wouldn’t return to that studio unless he had a fancy foreign car with him.

He stated, “It was then that I understood, if I don’t return to AVM Studios in a non-domestic vehicle, then I am not Rajinikanth.”

Rajinikanth fulfilled his manifestation to own a foreign car and ride it to the studio

As I draw the curtains on this story, let me share a personal achievement that resonates deeply with me: The fulfillment of my dream to own a foreign vehicle – an exquisite Italian Fiat, no less! To see it parked in my driveway was a testament to the power of dedication and hard work. I even went the extra mile by hiring a well-groomed chauffeur, adding a touch of elegance to every ride.

In a thrilling turn of events, I couldn’t help but relive the moment when I returned, triumphantly, to the very studio that once left me humiliated. But this time, it wasn’t just any return; it was after I had acquired my own foreign-made automobile, a symbol of my perseverance and success.

Feeling quite proud, Rajinikanth casually remarked, “I sat majestically with one leg crossed, as if a king on his throne. My vehicle pulled up at AVM Studios, parked where the producer would normally park by Robinson. I stepped out, lit two cigarettes, and many thought it was the Governor who had arrived.”

Rajinikanth’s professional front

In the year 2023, Rajinikanth achieved success with two major blockbusters, Lal Salaam and Jailer. Looking ahead, he’s set to appear in not one but two more highly anticipated films: Vettaiyan, scheduled for release in 2024, and Coolie, slated for 2025.
