Throwback: When Mammootty played Mohanlal’s father in a 1982 period film despite having only 9-year age gap

As a die-hard fan of Malayalam cinema, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe when I reflect upon the shared history between two giants like Mammootty and Mohanlal. Their on-screen collaboration in Padayottam, where they portrayed a father-son duo, remains one of my all-time favorite scenes. It’s fascinating to think that these two powerhouses, with just a 9-year age gap between them, brought such depth and authenticity to their roles.

For quite some time now, fans of Malayalam cinema have held Mammootty and Mohanlal in high regard. But, did you realize that these two acclaimed actors once appeared on-screen together in a movie, portraying the roles of a father and son?

Absolutely, the 1982 classic film “Padayottam,” helmed by director Jijo Punnoose, featured key characters enacted by talented actors, who beautifully depicted a father-son relationship on screen.

When Mammootty and Mohanlal featured together as father and son

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the exceptional chemistry between two of my all-time favorites, Mohanlal and Mammootty. These cinematic giants have graced our screens with their versatility, playing a wide array of captivating roles. But it was in a period film that truly blew my mind – they portrayed a father and son duo, quite an unusual pairing given their mere 9-year age gap off-screen.

Notably, the character of Kamaran portrayed by Mammootty marked a significant turning point in his career. Following this role, he tended to avoid older characters, but this part stood out as a notable exception.

The film drew inspiration from Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and it tells the story of a youthful prince returning home to exact revenge on those responsible for his uncle’s downfall. Along the journey, he encounters numerous challenges.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to highlight the stellar cast of this movie, which included acting legends such as Prem Nazir, Madhu, Lakshmi, Shankar, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Mammootty, Mohanlal, N. Govindan Kutty, and Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, among others, each bringing their unique talents to their pivotal roles.

According to a report from India Today’s archives, the movie in question was quite expensive compared to the typical Malayalam film at the time. While most movies were made for around 15 million rupees, this one had a budget of 100 million rupees.

On the work front

In the latest movie, Turbo, Mammootty took on the main character, directed by Vysakh. This action-comedy depicted him as Turbo Jose, a character who frequently gets involved with the wrong crowd and resorts to fisticuffs to extricate himself from them. The film was successful at the box office despite garnering mixed opinions from critics.

Right now, the actor is working on a new movie with director Gautham Vasudev Menon, who’s making his first film in Malayalam cinema. Interestingly, he’ll also appear in another project titled “Bazooka”.

Meanwhile, Mohanlal is preparing for the launch of his highly anticipated fantasy film “Barroz,” marking his debut as a director. Following several postponements, this movie is slated for release in cinemas on September 12, 2024.
