Looking back, it all began when a 24-year-old named Suriya crossed paths with the emerging actress Jyothika on the set of their 1999 Tamil film “Poovellam Kettupar.” By this point, Suriya had some experience in films, while Jyothika was new to the industry and found it challenging due to language difficulties.
Yet, it fell upon Suriya to provide solace during this tough phase, guiding her through linguistic hurdles and making things somewhat more comprehensible.
Suriya developed feelings for Jyothika after working together
Initially, their collaboration on a movie and assisting Jyothika with a foreign language evolved into something inexplicably tender. It was Suriya who first harbored affection for the actress, but it wasn’t until 2003 that they officially started dating, as their relationship blossomed over time.
Previously, during an interview with TellyChakkar, Jyothika shared a quality of Suriya that drew her in. She expressed, “What initially made me want to be with Surya was the respect he showed me. Our first collaboration was in the movie Poovellam Kettuppar. He spoke to me informally, which I found very appealing. After that, we worked together on nearly seven films. During romantic scenes directed by others, Suriya only acts as instructed and never oversteps bounds.

Over time, we’ve maintained this friendship, lasting until now. Given our longevity and persistence, I believe it’s primarily due to the strong bond of friendship we’ve nurtured.
Suriya and Jyothika’s marriage in 2006
After discussing their romantic journey, Suriya and Jyothika tied the knot in 2006 following several years of courtship. There were reportedly initial obstacles in their union because Suriya’s father, Sivakumar, had reservations due to cultural differences between them.
Initially, Suriya’s marriage proposal wasn’t immediately accepted by her. In fact, it took approximately a month for Jyothika to decide. Explaining the reasons behind this delay, Jyothika shared that she was exhausted after a decade of hectic work routines. Consequently, she needed some time before finally tying the knot with him.
During an interview with TellyChakkar, the actress shared that for approximately ten years, she worked on film sets from 9 am to 6 pm every day. This long period of work left her feeling exhausted. She had accumulated enough money by then. It was at this stage in her life that Surya proposed, and with the agreement of her family, she got married just a month later without any second thoughts.
Despite facing numerous challenges, the couple managed to overcome them all and got married in a grand ceremony held in Chennai on September 11, 2006. Their wedding was celebrated with the presence of their loved ones at the Park Sheraton Hotel in Chennai.
Jyothika left her career at its peak after marriage with Suriya
After marrying Suriya and Jyothika, the actress chose to depart from the world of films. At the height of her success, she took a five-year hiatus. Although the specific reasons for this choice remained private, it was rumored that there were family pressures from Suriya’s side concerning her professional life.
Nevertheless, Jyothika came back to the big screen in 2015 and has featured in a variety of productions ever since, spanning films and online streaming platforms. It’s worth noting that she’s grown more particular about the roles she accepts as time goes by.
