Three under-the-radar horror films to watch this week on Netflix

Three under-the-radar horror films to watch this week on Netflix

As a seasoned gamer and horror aficionado with over two decades of spine-tingling experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Netflix has been my go-to destination for all things terrifying. With its vast library of chilling content, it’s like having a personal demon summoner at your fingertips!

At any point in time, Netflix offers around 200 horror movies that will keep your adrenaline pumping with their chilling effects. If you’re an enthusiast of the dark and mysterious, it seems like exactly what you’d be after, doesn’t it? Just as Stephen King calls his devoted readers, the Constant Readers, crave that thrill that touches the heart.

Netflix is thrilled to give you the chills that will keep you up at night, one after another. They’d be overjoyed if you became their Regular Viewer. I must admit that Stephen King often complains about his own work, but he’s also quick to praise it when it’s due. In fact, when King draws inspiration from others, it often leads to remarkable creations. Pennywise has certainly elevated the fear factor of clowns to new heights.

The movie isn’t part of the collection of films below. A production earning over $1.1 billion globally wasn’t exactly an unknown entity. Instead, it towered majestically above the looming cloud cover that still seems to be advancing towards you – quite eerie, don’t you think? Mentioning Stephen King, he too was associated with a film that didn’t quite attain the level of popularity.

Three underseen horror flix you need to watch this week

1922

1922, a film adaptation from Stephen King’s novella, was initially published in Full Dark, No Stars. This Netflix Original debuted on October 20, 2017. The movie was helmed by director Zak Hilditch, who had previously impressed us with These Final Hours. Thomas Jane delivers an outstanding performance in this production.

In this rephrased version, we find that Jane portrays Farmer Wilf James, struggling to make ends meet alongside his wife Arlette and son Henry. While the movie reveals some plot twists in the opening moments, I’ll keep those details under wraps. Suffice it to say that Wilf soon embarks on an eerie path reminiscent of Stephen King stories. The intrigue lies not in what transpires, but rather in the consequences of his actions. Thomas Jane delivers a stunning performance in this role, which even Stephen King himself found impressive – and that’s saying something given his history with adaptations of his work. You can catch it here.

Mandy

Instead of dwelling on the captivating appeal of the movie “1922”, let’s shift our focus to the utterly wild ride that is “Mandy”, which could very well be Nic Cage’s most eccentric performance ever. I’ve taken a look at some of his recent works like “Renfield”, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”, and “Prisoners of the Ghostland”. Quite the prolific actor, isn’t he? “Mandy” hit the screens in September 2017 but unfortunately had a quick exit from the box office – much like some of its characters.

In the movie titled “Mandy“, Nicolas Cage plays Red Miller, a war veteran and lumberjack who resides with his artist girlfriend Mandy in the remote wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. It doesn’t take long before they become targets of a terrifying cult. A series of distressing events unfold, and Nicolas Cage delivers his unique brand of intensity. The entire film seems like a vivid nightmare, which perfectly suits the director Panos Cosmatos’ style. His first film, “Beyond the Black Rainbow“, is also worth checking out. By the way, you won’t be able to stream “Mandy” on Netflix after New Year’s Eve 2024 – a perfect way to welcome 2025! You can watch it [here](link).

The Girl With All the Gifts

Originating in the UK back in September 2016, this blend of science fiction and horror was later introduced to American audiences in February 2017. Similar to Nicolas Cage’s film, it didn’t quite achieve commercial stardom. However, it truly warranted a broader fanbase. Fortunately, you now have the opportunity to become part of that larger audience!

The main character, or “Girl,” is actually a zombie-like creature, but don’t be alarmed as this type of undead being is a common trope in contemporary zombie films. However, it’s important to note that these creatures weren’t truly dead; instead, most people were infected by a fungus that parasitically took over their bodies. While it may remind you of “The Last of Us,” the concept of using a fungus for this purpose has roots dating back to 1859. So, rest assured, there’s an interesting twist here!

Hey there! As a gamer, let me tell you about an intriguing movie I stumbled upon. Instead of controlling a character in a game, I’m part of the audience, immersed in a thrilling tale. The film is set at a military base where a mysterious girl is under study. Just when things seem bleak and she’s about to be wiped out, chaos ensues as the base gets overrun!

If you’re a dedicated horror enthusiast, chances are you’ve watched at least one, if not all, of these overlooked gems. The first film, “1922,” didn’t have a theatrical release, and the combined box office earnings of the remaining two movies were barely $6 million. These films certainly didn’t receive the recognition they deserved. However, I strongly suggest you give them a watch. To put it simply, these films are right up your alley, devout Cinema Lover.
