Back in 1984, I found myself captivated by the comedic genius that is “This Is Spinal Tap,” directed by Rob Reiner for his first time at the helm. It’s a hilarious tale about a fictitious heavy metal band named Spinal Tap, and their misadventures during an American tour. The dialogue in this film is mostly improvised, adding a layer of authenticity to the band’s antics.
Initially, This Is Spinal Tap received almost unanimous praise but didn’t generate substantial income at cinemas. Yet, its home video launch attracted a massive influx of viewers, and it soon amassed a devoted fanbase. Eventually, it was recognized for preservation by the National Film Registry in 2002, as it was deemed “significant” by the Library of Congress due to its cultural, historical, or artistic value.
Back in May 2022, a follow-up to “This Is Spinal Tap” was officially announced, with an initial planned release date of March 19, 2024. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the production has been postponed.
The follow-up to the movie will be premiered on September 12, 2025 instead. As per initial announcements, the film’s storyline revolves around England’s loudest and most punctual band, Spinal Tap, reunion after a 15-year break for their last concert. Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, along with Matthew George, are producing Spinal Tap 2, while Christopher H. Warner and Derrick Rossi act as executive producers.
