Stepping into São Paulo’s Rua Polônia, I found myself greeted by a serene front garden, my new abode, designed by architects Gabriel Kogan and Guilherme Pianca, standing elegantly to the left, parallel to a five-meter setback. This urban retreat, nestled within a peaceful residential area, offers a quick gateway to the city center, yet maintains an air of tranquility. Upon first sight, the house serves as a focal point, strategically placed to enhance spatial awareness with its structured and deliberate layout, creating a lasting impression that’s both inviting and intentional.
This expansive house, covering approximately 977 square meters, presents a linear journey filled with carefully arranged vistas that accentuate straight-on and depth aspects, deliberately limiting diagonal views to foster a cohesive and balanced spatial flow. The architectural design uses a modular system, where identical modules are aligned along the two-story concrete exterior, forming a rhythmic layout akin to an endless grid. The solid end walls at the front and back serve as breaks in this pattern, hinting at limitless growth while preserving harmony. Although repetition is characteristic of minimalism, the design cleverly adapts this style with a tropical and welcoming flair, reflecting the local environment’s distinct character.
As a design enthusiast, I prioritize the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics in my creations. I steer clear of excessively ornate trends, instead opting for minimalism and practicality. The wooden panels I use serve dual purposes, acting as doors, shelves, and more, while cementitious floors, windows, and concrete structures fulfill their roles without unnecessary adornment. In areas like bathrooms and kitchens, durability and maintenance ease are paramount, ensuring a cohesive architectural flow without arbitrary design choices.
A distinctive feature of the design is the uninterrupted wooden ceiling in the living area, which avoids visual clutter like holes or attachments. This strategy creates a special ambiance with soft, reflected lighting that’s both comfortable and inviting. The airflow is cleverly controlled through the floor and subtle gaps around the window frame, forming a pristine wooden enclosure that harmoniously fits within the concrete structure. The living room’s link to the garden, filled with natural rocks and lush greenery, amplifies the peaceful and balanced feel of the entire design.
The house blends interior and exterior seamlessly by sinking the living room floor, providing garden vistas at ground level. This modification also increases the ceiling height in the social area by 55 centimeters, giving an impression of spaciousness while maintaining the facade’s horizontal harmony and the square dimensions of external components. The outcome is a harmonious and well-planned spatial journey that harmoniously combines openness with structure.
