As a long-time gamer and avid follower of the ZZZ community, I must say that the “Butt Filter Incident of 2024” left me quite baffled. It seemed like an unusual cause for outrage, but then again, the gaming world is full of surprises. The update was indeed a strange decision, especially considering the game’s history of provocative character designs.
Following the latest upgrade for ZZZ, players found they could no longer view the lower backs of their characters, which was met with great displeasure by the gaming community.
Amongst the gaming community, there’s a growing anger over unconventional gaming practices such as pay-to-win mechanics, excessive pricing, and peculiar actions by game creators. Additionally, there’s a strong reaction due to the removal of certain visual elements, like the inability to see characters’ backsides.
The Butt Filter incidence of 2024
The journey began when MiHoYo launched update 1.4 for their game, Zenless Zone Zero, which introduced numerous modifications, one of them being an adjustment to how Agents are displayed at certain angles, making them appear slightly faded or blurred from specific viewpoints – essentially implementing a “butt filter”.

In the subreddit known as ZZZ, things remained just as tumultuous. One user commented, “Why is hoyo preventing me from viewing Lycaon and Lighter’s dump trucks? This has to be some sort of illegal activity.” Another user wrote, “It seems extremely underhanded to attract a huge number of players with the most sexually charged characters ever, only to then modify the game to meet certain demands when the most anticipated character for the game is finally released.
There have also been whispers that the Chinese government’s political policies on censorship might be implicated.
Removal of the heinous crime
In a span of under 24 hours post the update, MiHoYo communicated via their platform X (previously known as Twitter) that they would be rolling back the update. They emphasized on being attentive to feedback and suggestions from players, aiming to deliver an optimal gaming experience. Consequently, they swiftly addressed and rectified several problems that emerged after the update upon receiving player feedback.
Regardless of the true cause, I may not fully comprehend or agree with it, but it appears that the ZZZ community expresses satisfaction with the reversal of the update and the return of their characters’ posterior features.
Do you think the outrage was justified? What are your opinions on that kind of censorship?
