After the Steam Summer Sale has ended and emptied our wallets yet again, every cash-strapped PC gamer is searching for some fantastic freebies. Fortunately, a superb 3D sci-fi strategy game is completely free on Valve’s PC gaming marketplace, and it runs smoothly on Steam Deck.
During the Steam Summer Sale, the game development company Black Lab Games offered their Battlestar Galactica strategy game for free to own on Steam temporarily.
Initially launched in 2017, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock finds you leading the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. Your responsibilities include strategizing and constructing vessels, followed by deploying them to a 3D battlefield where you’ll engage in combat to defend the Twelve Colonies from the extraterrestrial threat.
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock free on Steam
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is free on Steam right here until July 17, 2025.
Direct the Colonial Fleet aboard the spacecraft Daidalos and liberate the Twelve Colonies from the Cylon danger. Construct your fleets, safeguard the Quorum alliance, and delve further into the mysteries surrounding this epic struggle.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share that Battlestar Galactica Deadlock boasts a Very Positive rating on Steam and is fully compatible with the Steam Deck! While the game initially offers partial controller support, the vibrant gaming community has provided numerous custom mappings, turning the gameplay experience on Valve’s handheld into an absolute joy.
Moreover, the game allows you to pause real-time action whenever you want, making it convenient for everyone, particularly controller users. For me, many strategy games, particularly 3D ones, can be tricky to navigate on the Deck. However, this setup offers a more streamlined experience than most.
Based on my personal use, Battlestar Galactica Desdlock seems to work exceptionally well with Steam Deck, and it’s far more enjoyable in a handheld format compared to Sins of a Solar Empire. Admittedly, even though Sins of a Solar Empire: Sins of the Prophets has an outstanding Halo-inspired theme, the gameplay can feel somewhat awkward at times.
It’s unclear why the strategy game is currently free, as there hasn’t been an official announcement. However, like many strategy games, there’s a large selection of downloadable content available, and it’s all discounted at the moment. So, one might infer that this sale could be part of the reason for the game’s temporary free status.
