As a long-time fan of Emily in Paris, I must say that season 4 part 2 has been quite the rollercoaster ride for our beloved character. The plot twists and turns have left me both excited and a tad bewildered, but one thing is certain – change is afoot!
Warning: Spoilers ahead from Emily in Paris season 4 part 2.
In season 4 of “Emily in Paris,” Emily experiences numerous life changes, leaving us wondering about the show’s future direction. Initially embroiled in a complex romantic situation that ultimately backfired on her, Emily ends up in a brand-new relationship and prepares to relocate to an entirely new European city by the season’s conclusion.
In numerous aspects, “Emily in Paris” has expanded and transformed significantly during its impressive fourth season, a development that unfortunately seems to have left certain characters behind. Specifically, Alfie and Camille appear to have taken on roles as mere plot devices, a situation that is more noticeable than ever in this latest season. Regrettably, the series has moved beyond the necessity of Alfie and Camille, who seem to have overstayed their welcome.
Camille received a happy ending in season 4
Right from the start, Camille appeared to be more of a complicated acquaintance than a friend for Emily. She is both an intermittent love interest of Gabriel and a frequent work partner at Agence Grateau, making their relationship challenging for Emily. Camille, along with her mother, intentionally kept Gabriel away from Emily, forming a secret pact that Emily didn’t initiate. Events like the near-wedding and near-baby added more complications to Emily’s friendship with Camille, making it a bumpy journey indeed.
To put it straight, I found Camille’s character quite challenging in season 4, particularly in part 2. The heartache she went through upon learning she wasn’t really pregnant was palpable, but the way she concealed this truth from Gabriel, watching their relationship with Emily crumble bit by bit, was tough to stomach. It wasn’t easy to cheer her on either. By the end of season 4, in episode 9, Camille makes her last appearance at Agence Grateau, where she encounters Emily while signing documents. She shares some exciting news with her, which I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions about.
Camille has discovered a fresh dwelling (she hasn’t specified the location yet, but it won’t be next door to Gabriel), which offers both an artistic workspace and a space for a nursery. Following the challenges she encountered during her pregnancy, she came to the conclusion that she yearned for motherhood. (Earlier in the season, she suggested adoption to Gabriel, but he wasn’t keen on the idea.) She’s taking steps independently, without Gabriel or Sofia, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for her.
It appears that this storyline might conclude on a positive note. With the chapters moving forward, it seems like Camille’s role has been primarily to create complications for Emily and Gabriel. Given that Emily is now with Marcello in Rome, and Gabriel desires Emily’s return, one might wonder where Camille fits into the narrative going forward. If there were a fifth season, it seems unlikely that Camille would remain a central character, as her function as a constant source of conflict has become repetitive and could benefit from a fresh approach.
Alfie deserves better than being second pick
And that brings us to Alfie. Yes, he’s a fan-favorite character and there’s vocal majority of Emily in Paris fans who wholeheartedly believe Emily should have chosen Alfie over Gabriel. (Time will tell where Marcello falls on the spectrum, though he’s already earning high praise from this writer.) However, as a character, Alfie deserves a lot better than he’s been getting from the series, and it’s super telling that his portrayer, Lucien Laviscount, wasn’t a series regular for season 4.
In the series, it was initially established that Alfie was secondary to Emily’s romantic interests, with Gabriel being the main focus for her from the start. Although circumstances can alter the intended outcome, the writers have consistently followed a path towards uniting Emily and Gabriel. Therefore, it’s understandable that Emily didn’t end up with Alfie, as he moved on and found love with someone else in season 4 part 2.
As long as Alfie is immersed in the world of “Emily in Paris”, working with Antoine and Gabriel at the restaurant, and isn’t romantically linked with Emily or another key character, his storyline doesn’t seem to expand beyond this context. Unlike characters like Mindy, Sylvie, Gabriel, and even Camille who each have their own distinct storylines that often diverge from Emily’s, Alfie’s role in the series seems largely tied to Emily’s presence.
Though it’s hard to accept, Alfie (and Lucien Laviscount!) shouldn’t stay merely because of our fondness for him. If the character development remains stagnant in season 5 like it was in season 4, it loses its charm. However, we do expect updates on his new journey and relationship. We wish nothing but the best for him! But being honest, he hasn’t had much room to grow within Emily’s sphere. It’s better for him to move on and find his own path.
