Theory: Here's why an Abbott Elementary/It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode could work

Oh my gracious stars and garters! As a fan who’s been following these shows since their inception, I can confidently say that the prospect of an “It’s Always Sunny in Abbott Elementary” crossover has sent me into a state of pure, unadulterated glee. Now, I know it might seem like a far-fetched idea, but let me tell you, this is the stuff dreams are made of!

Previously at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, the beloved Quinta Brunson, the mind behind Abbott Elementary and portraying teacher Janine Teagues, hinted at an intriguing crossover episode in season 4, describing it as something “truly exhilarating” that could potentially revolutionize television as we understand it. Naturally, since she didn’t disclose any details, fans like us have been brainstorming possibilities about who or what this potential collaboration might involve.

Cross-over episodes are exciting since they allow characters from different shows on the same network to interact, making it thrilling for viewers! Brunson hinted that this particular cross-over will be unique and distinct, which has sparked some intriguing ideas in my mind. Now, let me share a somewhat unconventional thought. Give me a chance to explain.

It’s Always Sunny in Abbott Elementary has a nice ring to it, right?

Imagine merging “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” how about a title like “Always Sunny at Abbott Elementary“? Here are some compelling reasons why such a crossover could be intriguing:

Moreover, not only are these shows sitcoms, but they also share the same timeframe – the year 2024. Unlike one being set in the ’80s and the other being contemporaneous, both of these series unfold within the same timeline. In “It’s Always Sunny,” the unruly gang has previously attended schools, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine them at Abbott Elementary!

Could you picture the shock on Barbara’s face due to the group’s behavior? Given that their antics are intended for broadcast on ABC, it’s essential they moderate Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dee, and Frank a bit. However, I suspect they could still cause distress for Barbara. I imagine Melissa and Ava would find them entertaining. Also, a devout Mac might criticize Jacob for being gay. Yet, the teacher may be able to enlighten Mr. Ronald McDonald, helping him adapt his perspective.

It strikes me as an incredibly amusing concept to blend these shows, and it’s unique since it hasn’t been attempted before. Although “Abbott Elementary” airs on ABC and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is on FX, both belong to the same company – Disney. Therefore, there shouldn’t be any complications regarding their crossover.

In addition to sharing similar settings of less-than-ideal districts, ‘Abbott Elementary’ and another show (name not specified) have both hinted at significant changes coming up in their respective neighborhoods. Recently, in an interview with TVLine, creator Quinta Brunson revealed that season 4 of ‘Abbott Elementary’ will introduce a “looming change” within the neighborhood where the school is situated.

There’s this larger, looming change happening in the neighborhood where Abbott is, essentially, located, and we’re seeing the impact of that on our school.

It’s quite possible that the characters from both sitcoms reside in the same community that is undergoing gentrification. They might need to join forces to tackle this situation together or even attempt to prevent it somehow. I truly believe this cross-over scenario isn’t far-fetched at all!

I don’t think it’s likely, it’s a wild theory. But it’s fun to think about and I kind of have my heart set on it now. And, hey. If Brunson or anyone from ABC or FX is reading this and like my idea, I give you full permission to run with it and make it happen. I would love that. What do you think about the Abbott/It’s Always Sunny crossover theory?

The fourth season of “Abbott Elementary” will start airing on ABC on October 9, 2024. Meanwhile, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is being developed for its seventeenth season at FX.
