The towering Pong-Pong tree, reaching approximately 12 meters in height, is scientifically known as Cerbera odollam. This tree sports shiny green leaves and a weathered grey bark. Embedded within its kernel are two highly toxic seeds, rich in cerberin – a compound that triggers symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, coma, headaches, and potentially fatal cardiac arrest at high doses by disrupting the heart’s ability to use potassium and sodium effectively.
In numerous countries during the 19th century, including Madagascar, these seeds were utilized in trials by ordeal that aimed to determine guilt or innocence using supernatural means. Since their bitterness can easily be masked by spicy flavors, they have also been frequently used for malicious purposes such as poisonings. Regrettably, they are also associated with a significant number of suicides, earning the Pong-Pong tree its somber nickname.
