Set 183-200 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s epic trilogy and over 1,000 years after The Rings of Power, this film promises to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Rohan’s history.
As a diehard fan of Middle-earth, I can’t help but ponder where the upcoming release of “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” fits into the grand timeline of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic universe. This new film promises to delve into the fierce conflict between King Helm Hammerhand of Rohan and the Dunlending lord, Wulf. Seeking vengeance for his father’s death at Helm’s hands, Wulf aims to shake the very foundations of Rohan in this gripping tale set within the annals of Middle-earth’s tumultuous history.
Wondering where The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim fits within the Lord of the Rings timeline? Here’s what we know so far.
Here’s when The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is set in the LoTR timeline
The War of the Rohirrim” is set around 183 to 200 years before the storyline in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. This means it happened more than a thousand years after the events portrayed in Amazon Prime Video’s The Rings of Power, which unfolded during the Second Age.
According to J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices, there’s a span of approximately 250 years separating the War of the Rohirrim and The Lord of the Rings saga. These appendices provide details about the rulers of Rohan, like Goldwine and Gram, helping us pinpoint Helm Hammerhand’s reign (from 2691 to 2759) and Theoden’s (as seen in the movies, from 2948 to 3019), thus filling in the timeline between these two significant events.
The War of the Rohirrim covers the appendice of Helm Hammerhand’s reign. In this appendice, Helm Hammerhand is visited by Dunlending Freca. Freca claims descent from King Freawine and asks for his daughter’s hand in marriage to his son, Wulf.
These incidents triggered a clash between Helm and Freca, ending with Freca’s demise. These occurrences are portrayed in the official sneak peek for The War of the Rohirrim. Additionally, the trailer hints at an escalating struggle between the Dunlendings and Rohan.
In the upcoming film adaptation of Tolkien’s work, a character who remains unnamed in the original text but is Helm’s daughter, takes on a significant role. This character has been named Hera for the movie and appears set to be Wulf’s main antagonist. Directing duties were handled by Kenji Kamiyama, renowned for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Miranda Otto, who portrayed Éowyn in the original trilogy, lends her voice as the film’s narrator.
