The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon - How did Daryl end up in France in season 1?

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of The Walking Dead franchise, I can confidently say that the spinoff series, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, has been an unexpected yet exhilarating addition to the TWD universe. Having played countless hours of survival games, I can relate to Daryl’s struggle for survival in a foreign land, albeit with zombies instead of digital monsters.

AMC has truly excelled at crafting the widely popular “The Walking Dead” universe encompassing the core series, six offshoots, and numerous webisodes, all unfolding within the same zombie-infested setting. In such an apocalypse, though the undead pose a significant danger, it’s the living that become the greater menace. One of the spinoffs, titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” takes the expansion of this franchise to unprecedented heights by shifting the action to France. Initially, the idea may have seemed far-fetched, but it was executed brilliantly.

In the debut episode of Daryl Dixon’s spinoff, titled “Lost Soul,” we find Daryl (played by Norman Reedus), bound to an overturned boat in the midst of the sea. The voice of Judith (Cailey Fleming) echoes, saying, “You also deserve a happy ending.” As per showrunner David Zabel, this takes place around three to four weeks after the events concluded in the final episode of The Walking Dead.

Upon reaching the shore, his aim is to return to where he belongs. However, things take an unexpected turn when he meets a nun named Isabelle (played by Clémence Poésy) and a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi). They require Daryl’s assistance in taking the boy to The Nest, a refuge for a resistance group called the Union of Hope. This group holds the belief that, due to his mother contracting an infection while pregnant, Laurent is crucial for humanity’s future.

Viewers won’t find out about Daryl’s journey to France until episode five, titled “Deux Amours.” The story unfolds through flashbacks, showing Daryl in the U.S., riding his motorcycle on a highway. He encounters a man who proposes a job in exchange for fuel. This task involves Daryl collecting walkers of a certain type, but the reason for their use remains unclear at this point in the story. However, he proves to be quite effective at completing it.

He notices a man in conversation via radio and Daryl asks him for help in contacting Carol (Melissa McBride) at the Commonwealth. He informs her of his location in Maine and promises he will return within a week. Her voice sounds troubled and as the connection is lost she tells him someone has returned.

In the work camp, Daryl engages in a brawl with an individual named Juno (John Ales), breaching the camp’s regulations that prohibit fighting, theft, and immoral behavior. As a consequence, they are both apprehended and transported on a ship headed for France, filled with walkers that were gathered. Daryl and Juno are confined in a shipping container with other captives. The crew starts using them as food for the walkers. Determined to escape, they devise a plan which eventually succeeds, but unfortunately, during the chaos, Juno is attacked by a walker and consumed. Daryl, however, manages to flee on the rowboat that he was seen in at the start of the series.
