As a gamer with over two decades of immersion in various worlds, virtual and otherwise, I can confidently say that “The Walking Dead” was not just another series; it was a rollercoaster ride through a post-apocalyptic nightmare, one that I hopped on willingly. The show’s debut, “Days Gone Bye,” hooked me like no other, setting the tone for a genre that would captivate millions worldwide.
It was fortunate for AMC that HBO declined The Walking Dead due to its violence, a reason that might seem ridiculous today. Despite having two successful series – Mad Men and Breaking Bad – under its belt, The Walking Dead catapulted AMC into prominence.
The pilot episode titled “Days Gone Bye” attracted approximately 5.3 million viewers and became a benchmark for other shows within its genre. Audiences found themselves captivated by the show, which was set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies, focusing on the lives of survivors. The series managed to maintain high viewership figures for multiple years.
On November 20, 2022, AMC broadcast its final episode of a series that had run for 12 years, spanning 11 seasons and producing a total of 177 episodes. Despite the fervent hopes of dedicated followers, the show experienced a significant decline in viewership following the premiere of season 7.
Fans vividly recall the debut episode of season 7, where the ominous character Negan Smith (portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) made his first appearance. This episode, titled “That Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” marked a significant turning point for the series that left many viewers squirming. The shocking violence and grisly deaths of Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) were hard to stomach for some, as they were not prepared for such intense scenes. Although this scene was based on the comics, it surprised many viewers who hadn’t read the source material beforehand. In hindsight, some creators of the show have expressed regret over including this scene in the series.
A significant error in the series was the character’s demise of Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs). Many viewers had witnessed his transformation from a child to an adult, and his death sparked intense anger within the fan community. The fans yearned for a positive resolution for him as he experienced in the comics, but this wish was not granted.
Despite losing key characters like Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne, the show managed to regain its footing during the last three seasons. In the end, it wrapped up with a 24-episode final season divided into three parts.
Fans have the opportunity to watch all eleven seasons of “The Walking Dead” on Netflix. This streaming service maintains a continuous partnership with AMC and presents various original series such as spin-offs from “The Walking Dead,” “Daryl Dixon,” and “Dead City.
