The Undertaker Opens up About His WWE Retirement Struggles

One of WWE’s most memorable characters, commonly known as The Undertaker, ruled the wrestling ring for more than three decades before calling it quits in 2020 at WrestleMania 36. In this final match against AJ Styles, they engaged in a cinematic Boneyard Match that garnered acclaim from fans worldwide.

2017 saw him intending to retire following his defeat at WrestleMania 33 against Roman Reigns. He symbolically ended his career by leaving his jacket, cap, and gloves in the ring. However, he astonished fans by making a comeback at WrestleMania 34 and convincingly overpowering John Cena in a one-sided match.

Following his intense encounter at WrestleMania 33, he participated in numerous matches afterwards before eventually retiring in the year 2020. Even now, more than four years on, it’s said that The Undertaker finds it challenging to adapt to life outside of wrestling.

The Undertaker reflects on the hardest part of retiring from wrestling

On his podcast, Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway, The Undertaker had a heartfelt conversation with Diamond Dallas Page about the tough emotional and mental hurdles he faced when deciding to step back from in-ring competition. He shared his personal battle of recognizing it was the appropriate time to retire while still feeling a strong urge to carry on.

He expressed, “Giving up and recognizing it was the correct decision is hard… I’ve been in that situation.” He went on to say, “I could still imagine continuing. I wanted to continue. But, I knew. It was as if I said, ‘I’m finished. I’m out of energy.’ It took me a while to truly accept it, even though I knew I was doing the right thing. There was still this feeling of uncertainty like, ‘What do I do next? I’m not sure if I want to coach or continue with this.’ It felt like, everything I had known for the last 30-plus years was coming to an end.” [Credit: WrestlingInc]
