The top 5 best moments from The Simpsons

The top 5 best moments from The Simpsons

As a child of the late 80s, I vividly remember the enchanting allure of “The Simpsons” that swept through our household during those magical family gatherings. The very first episode, which aired in December 1989, was an unforgettable experience for me – one that sparked a passion within me for the world of entertainment journalism.

Over the past 35 years, The Simpsons has delivered countless amusing and memorable scenes. We witnessed Homer portray a devoted father figure in his own unique way, while Marge often picked up the pieces of his mischief. Not to mention, the Simpson kids – Bart, Lisa, and Maggie – played significant roles in creating these iconic moments too.

1. It was quite challenging to select just five when there were so many timeless pieces to choose from. You can’t make a mistake with Homer’s consistent performances or the star-studded appearances. Or when Mr. Burns wasn’t as villainous during his interactions with his employees or in Springfield, although I greatly appreciate him as a villain. (Informal)

Kicks off on September 29, Season 36 joins the revamped Animation Domination lineup on FOX. To mark this occasion, let’s reminisce about five significant episodes that shaped the storyline and enduring influence of “The Simpsons.”

“The Simpsons,” a television show, holds the record as the longest-running scripted series, and it has garnered numerous Emmy awards for its animation, production quality, and writing. It’s no surprise, given that the writers have consistently kept the humor fresh throughout all these years, promising more laughs in season 36.

Now, let’s get a laugh or two from the top five moments

Homer attempts to protect his kids from the “Boogeyman” or “Boogeymen”

Season 5, episode 10 “Springfield’s Embrace of Legalized Betting: A Tale of Calm and Affection”

When a chilling Boogeyman nightmare jolts me awake, I immediately share my terror with Homer, who shares my fear of this mythical creature. In an instant, he transforms into a crazed protective father, grabbing his trusty shotgun. Two moments in this scenario send me into uncontrollable laughter. The first is when Homer bursts into Bart’s room, startling him with a Boogeyman warning that echoes through the house, causing Bart to let out a blood-curdling scream that would make even the bravest shudder.

So would I Bart.

The most striking event occurred when Marge returned home from a late night at Mr. Burns’ Casino, finding their bedroom in chaos. Since it’s Homer we’re dealing with, he immediately accused Marge of the mess, suggesting she could have stopped his reckless behavior. Despite the pandemonium, I must acknowledge that Homer acted protectively towards the kids and subtly pointed out Marge’s gambling issue.

Lisa becomes President of the United States

Season 11 episode 17: “Bart To The Future”

One interesting prediction showrunner Al Jean takes pride in: Lisa Simpson being elected POTUS and resembling the 2024 Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in a similar purple suit. In “Bart of the Future,” Bart receives a glimpse into the future from an Indigenous Chief at a reservation casino. By the age of 40, Bart resides at the White House, but not as a significant figure compared to others; he is, however, the president’s brother.

Moreover, The Simpsons predicted Trump’s presidency and financial crunch on the US economy.

Mr. Burns “adopts” Smithers

Season 13, episode 5: “The Blunder Years”

In the annals of The Simpsons, the pairing of Mr. Burns and Smithers is widely regarded as one of the most endearing and well-developed duos. While it’s true that Smithers, who is often portrayed as TV’s first openly gay man in primetime, is frequently depicted as being smitten with his boss, this isn’t the primary reason for their enduring appeal. Rather, it’s the heartwarming friendship between these two characters that resonates with viewers.

In “The Blunder Years,” I got a heart-wrenching glimpse into the past of my beloved character, Smithers, who’s not just Mr. Burns’ assistant but so much more. His dad was a dedicated scientist at our very town’s plant. When a catastrophic meltdown loomed over us, his father heroically gave his life, sacrificing himself in the reactor core to save us all.

Although burns might seem cold-hearted with his money-driven objectives, adopting Smithers suggests there’s warmth within him too.

Do It For Her

Season 6, episode 13: “And Maggie Makes Three”

When Homer leaves his position at the factory to pursue his long-held dream job at the bowling alley, it appears as though fortune is finally smiling upon him. Notably, he had only held onto the factory job to escape debt and support his family, and he never found joy in it, despite its decent remuneration.

Marge and Homer joyfully welcome his career change, followed by Maggie’s arrival. Realizing that being a pin jockey won’t sustain their growing family financially, Homer pleads for his old job to be reinstated. Enamored with Maggie after her birth, the proud father finds motivation to focus on work. He adorns the “emotional dampener plaque” with Maggie’s photos for instant pick-me-ups.

The Simpsons adopt Santa’s Little Helper

Season 1, episode 1: “The Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire”

Discovering that Santa’s Little Helper found a new home was the event that introduced The Simpsons into my life and significantly influenced my career choice as an entertainment journalist. I vividly recall my family and I gathering to watch the very first episode of The Simpsons in December 1989. As a five-year-old, I was immediately captivated by the Simpson family, sensing that the satirical animation was truly special.

After spending their Christmas budget on Bart’s medical treatment and missing out on his bonus, Homer was feeling down. To ensure a joyful holiday for his family and manage financially, he took on an additional job as a mall Santa. However, the pay wasn’t what he had hoped, so he turned to dog racing instead. Though this didn’t bring financial liberation, they ended up receiving boundless love and forming a lasting connection with their new pet, Santa’s Little Helper.

In the 1980s, pet adoption gained significant momentum, largely due to Bob Barker’s passionate advocacy and the growing number of animals in the U.S. seeking permanent homes. It would be fitting for The Simpsons writers to join this movement, as they skillfully created a heartwarming and unique Christmas storyline that embodies love and the spirit of the season.
