The Third ‘Dune’ Film Receives Official Title

Summary

  • Third Dune film officially titled Dune: Part Three, releasing December 18, 2026
  • Story picks up 12 years after Part Two; Chalamet, Zendaya, Pugh, Momoa return
  • Director Denis Villeneuve confirms this as his last Dune saga movie

As a gaming enthusiast, I can hardly contain my excitement! After years of waiting, we finally have an official title for Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited third chapter in the Dune saga – Dune: Part Three. Now, while many of us had speculated that it would be titled after Frank Herbert’s second novel, Dune: Messiah, this confirmation has left us in awe. The decision to stick with the naming convention established by the first two critically acclaimed films is a smart move, in my opinion. Mark your calendars, because it’s scheduled for release at the end of next year!

The movie is planned to be based on Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, but director Villeneuve and Warner Bros. have chosen to call it simply Dune (2021) and its sequel Dune: Part Two (2024). This move is intended to make the branding clearer and prevent confusion for new viewers, by linking the film directly as a continuation instead of a spin-off. Some fans, however, have voiced their displeasure, preferring “Messiah” as a title that they believe would carry more impact and distinction.

Dune: Part Three

In about a dozen years since the events of Dune: Part Two, we follow Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, now Emperor, navigating the intricate repercussions of his ascension. Key characters such as Zendaya (Chani), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan), and Timothée Chalamet himself will return to their roles. A significant surprise is Jason Momoa’s return as Duncan Idaho. The movie will contain scenes directed by Denis Villeneuve, who confirms this film as his last in the Dune saga. Expect another visually stunning experience from Villeneuve as he concludes Paul Atreides’ storyline in this installment.

The film is set to release on December 18, 2026.
