2025 finds me utterly captivated by the 4K revamp of George Stevens’ 1942 masterpiece, The Talk of the Town. Starring screen legends Cary Grant, Jean Arthur, and Ronald Colman, this timeless comedy-drama has become the buzz in our community. It was already a delight back in its day, but watching it now, it remains as entertaining as ever!
In the story, arson suspect Leopold Dilg (played by Cary Grant) manages to flee prison and takes refuge at his friend Nora’s (Jean Arthur) house, pretending to be a gardener. With Nora, he sets out to convince her summer tenant, Michael Lightcap (Ronald Colman, best known for Lost Horizon), that Dilg was wrongly accused. The trio then embarks on a series of comedic escapades as they evade the police, pursue the real criminals, and in the process discover that both men have developed feelings for Nora. Ultimately, the film reveals which man has won Nora’s affections, and it is part of the charm of The Talk of the Town – a comedic masterpiece from the Golden Age of Hollywood – that it was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Every time I receive a timeless movie from Sony, such as The Talk of the Town in 4K, I’m consistently amazed. This black-and-white masterpiece has undergone a beautiful restoration, making the visuals stand out and showcasing intricate details more clearly than ever before. Though I had watched it previously, watching it in 4K was like experiencing it for the first time again, deepening my appreciation for this timeless film.
One reason The Talk of the Town has remained relevant over time is its forward-thinking nature in numerous aspects. For instance, featuring two leading male characters was uncommon during that period, but watching Cary Grant and Ronald Colman share the screen and vie for Arthur’s affections makes for an entertaining experience. Moreover, the film’s unique blend of tones, combining a serious court trial with lots of humor, feels surprisingly contemporary.
4K Version of “The Talk of the Town” boasts some strong supplementary features, although they may not be exhaustive. A standout feature is an audio commentary by author Marilyn Ann Moss, who penned a book on director George Stevens. Marilyn provides valuable insights about the movie and her commentary is engaging. Furthermore, there’s a short interview with George Stevens Jr., titled “Discussing The Talk of the Town,” which is certainly worth watching.
The Talk of the Town 4K Review: Final Verdict
The Talk of the Town deserved its seven Academy Award nominations because it’s an exceptional movie that continues to hold up well over time. Thankfully, Sony’s 4K release of The Talk of the Town does justice to this classic film, offering modern audiences a chance to appreciate the comedy-drama.
