Jenny Han, the writer and joint executive producer of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” has revealed in a recent interview that the series will conclude with an alternate and improved ending compared to the original trilogy it was adapted from. It’s worth mentioning that Han is also the author of the trilogy. The first season of the show made its debut on June 17, 2022, with the second season airing on July 14, 2023. The third and final season, which was also the last installment of the show, was released on Prime Video on July 16, 2025.
Jenny Han hints The Summer I Turned Pretty’s ending will be different from books
In her latest chat with Elite Daily, Han emphasized that just because someone has read the books doesn’t mean they can predict the ending of the series. She hinted at alterations in the script to ensure a unique and improved narrative compared to the original trilogy.
Han shared, “I’m the type who frequently switches things around.” People might ask, “Why are you changing it? It was functioning fine!” Yet, for me, there’s always room for improvement. This mindset guides my actions, so I went into this story thinking about how to make it even better and experiment with fresh ideas.
The series introduces its original characters from the third season’s debut episode. The author stated that there are new acquaintances at college and someone for Conrad in medical school.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing my interpretation of Han’s comment: It seems that Lola Tung’s character “Isabel ‘Belly’ Conklin,” might deviate from her romantic path in the series compared to what we see in the trilogy.
In 2009, the first book known as “The Summer I Turned Pretty” was released. Following that, Han published two sequels: “It’s Not Summer Without You” in 2010 and “We’ll Always Have Summer” in 2011.
In all, there are eleven episodes in the third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. It kicked off with a double episode debut, and new episodes will be released weekly. Consequently, the final episode of the series is set to stream on September 17, 2025.
