The rural Japanese setting, the enigmatic synopsis, and the hauntingly beautiful visuals have me hooked.

Netflix has unveiled a sneak peek, titled “The Summer Hikaru Perished“, for an upcoming supernatural anime adaptation of the critically acclaimed manga series by Mokumokuren. As of now, there’s no confirmed premiere date for this anime.

In a peaceful Japanese countryside lives a duo of inseparable friends named Yoshiki and Hikaru. Their bond grew stronger as they journeyed through life together… until the fateful day when Hikaru returned from the mountains, showing signs of an unsettling change. It appears that some unknown entity has taken control over Hikaru’s being, including his memories, emotions, and very identity, causing a ripple effect that threatens to shatter their familiar world.

The video showcases two individuals, who appear to be close friends, discussing future prospects upon completing high school. Yet, their dialogue takes an unusual turn when Yoshiki discloses that the person he’s addressing is not actually his buddy, Hikaru.

In simple terms, “The Summer Hikaru Died” is a series produced by CygamesPictures and directed by Ryohei Takeshita. Yuichi Takahashi oversees the main animation direction. The lead roles are voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi as Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Shuichiro Umeda as Hikaru Indou.

In a statement, Takeshita expressed his enthusiasm about reading the original work and figuring out how to animate its scenes. He added that his team was deeply committed to portraying the subtle emotions of Yoshiki and Hikaru, as well as the intricate and imaginative layout of the manga.
