The Substance’s Margaret Qualley Says Movie ‘F—ed Up’ Her Face

2024’s “The Substance” has earned Margaret Qualley significant acclaim for her acting skills. However, she admitted that the extensive use of prosthetics in the film took a toll on her skin because the project was intended as a body horror movie. As a result, Qualley had to wear multiple layers of makeup for various scenes. In a recent conversation, Qualley disclosed that this process ultimately led to harm on her face.

According to Margaret Qualley, the process of working on ‘The Substance’ proved to be quite a tough task for her, partly because of the use of prosthetics on her.

During her conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Qualley revealed that in the scenes where the camera focused on her legs at the start and end, as well as during the opening credits with palm trees and long lenses from below, this was due to her face being severely affected by the filming process at that point, making it difficult for them to capture close-ups of her face anymore. She further mentioned that it took approximately a year for her to fully recover physically from the entire experience.

In her subsequent movie, Kinds of Kindness, the impact of The Substance persisted for Margaret Qualley. Interestingly, the skin issues she encountered proved beneficial as she took on various characters in this film. As she remarked, “Ah, this is quite fitting! I’m portraying multiple characters here,” and further explained, “For one role, we’ll make full use of my extensive prosthetic acne.

Demi Moore, like Margaret Qualley, has shared similar thoughts about the physical strain they experienced during filming for ‘The Substance’. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Moore often spent up to six hours getting ready to portray her character.
