As a long-time fan of Tequila Works, I feel a profound sense of sadness and disbelief as I write this. From their humble beginnings in 2009 to the release of the stunningly beautiful Rime in 2017, they’ve been a beacon of creativity and passion in the gaming industry. Their motto, “creating things with gusto,” was not just a catchy slogan but a testament to their spirit.
The studio behind Rime has officially filed for insolvency.
Who are Tequila Works?
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m proud to say that I hail from Tequila Works, a humble Spanish game development studio established in 2009 by the dynamic duo Raúl Rubio and Luz Sancho. Initially, our team was a small but passionate group of creators. Our mantra has always been “let’s bring enthusiasm to everything we do!
The team’s initial venture was a sidescrolling survival horror game titled “Deadlight,” which hit the market in early 2012. This game garnered moderate success, prompting them to publish their subsequent project, the visually stunning adventure game known as “Rime,” in 2017.
In addition, there were several joint ventures and cooperative projects with various other studios. For instance, we teamed up with Gametrust Games to develop the VR game titled “The Invisible Hours,” while collaborating with Cavalier Game Studios on another project called “The Sexy Brutale.
In March of 2022, the gaming and tech firm Tequila Works garnered an unspecified investment from Tencent, a worldwide leader based in Shenzhen, China. However, this funding didn’t seem to be sufficient.
Tequila Works files for insolvency
Tequila Works have now filed for insolvency.
Initially, the two main figures at the studio, Rubio and Sancho, abruptly departed the studio following the submission of the bankruptcy filing. Now, previously the COO, Terence Mosca, has temporarily taken over as the interim studio manager.
Mosca explicitly told GamesIndustry.biz that the financial troubles are due to prolonged difficulties within the market.
Recently, Tequila Works shared on LinkedIn that they had to unfortunately scrap an entire game project which hadn’t been revealed yet, primarily due to financial shortages. This unfortunate situation also led to some team members being let go.
With deep regret, we must inform of the decision to cancel an unannounced game. This tough decision means we will be restructuring the studio to concentrate on the development of only one game. These changes will have an impact to a small number of roles at the studio.
This is an incredibly difficult time, and our focus is to provide the support and guidance to those affected.
Despite their repeated calls to fulfill their duties, they’re finding it challenging to keep up and seem to be falling short when it comes to fairly compensating their employees.
To put it simply, the situation doesn’t appear promising for this cherished studio, and it seems quite likely that it will shut down completely in the not-too-distant future.
