The Sandman Writer Explains [Spoiler]’s Casting in Season 2 Ending

Netflix’s hit series, “The Sandman,” has now wrapped up its story with the captivating finale of Season 2 serving as the closing act for the beloved DC character. Following the grand conclusion of The Sandman, showrunner Allan Heinberg has shared insights into the choice to cast a former star from Game of Thrones in the last two episodes of Season 2.

Jacob Anderson’s casting in The Sandman Season 2 ending explained

Recently, Allan Heinberg explained his decision to cast the actor from Timestalker as Daniel Hall (the new Dream) after Tom Sturridge’s character Morpheus met his end in The Sandman Season 2 finale.

The experienced screenwriter remarked to TV Insider, “Jacob radiates joy wherever he goes.” He further commented, “Jacob is sincere yet not overly innocent. In that scene with Lyta, you could see his strong moral compass – he carries the role with such elegance and brings a touch of humanity to it. This was something Morpheus grappled with throughout the series.

In the role of Morpheus’ successor, Dream in The Sandman Season 2 finale, I personally picked Jacob Anderson. It was his versatility across various roles, the depth of his performances that truly resonated with me, his intelligence, and his ability to convey intense emotions that made him stand out.

It turns out that Jacob was a massive admirer of the comics and season 1, and he saw Heinberg’s intention to cast him as Daniel as the greatest compliment. Consequently, Allan Heinberg eventually wrote the script for season 2 with Jacob specifically in mind.

In this new turn of events, Anderson takes on the role of Dream, as Sturridge’s Morpheus chooses to bear the repercussions of killing his son, Orpheus. Consequently, Daniel Hall is named as his replacement.

In an exciting turn of events, Neil Gaiman hinted at a potential third season of The Sandman, focusing on Jacob Anderson’s portrayal of Dream. Gaiman, who has written for Wonder Woman, expressed his fondness for Anderson’s performance and stated, “I structured the end of this season with a possible Season 3 in mind, as I simply can’t get enough of watching Jacob play this role.

The two seasons of The Sandman are now available for streaming on Netflix.
