Fresh snapshots from the upcoming season 2 of “The Sandman” are out now, giving enthusiasts an initial peek at Jack Gleeson’s portrayal as Puck and Barry Sloane’s embodiment of Destruction.
In the last and concluding season of the highly praised Netflix show inspired by Neil Gaiman’s comic, we will meet several fresh characters including Puck played by Gleeson, along with the remaining siblings of the Endless: Destiny, Delirium, and Prodigal (also known as Destruction). Notably, Prodigal, who had abandoned his domain and his familial duties to the other Endless for a considerable period, will make an appearance.
Entertainment Weekly revealed initial glimpses of Gleeson and Sloane portraying Puck and Destruction, respectively, and had a chat with Allan Heinberg regarding their castings. The showrunner commended the actors for the rich dimensions they added to their characters. Additionally, a fresh glimpse at Tom Sturridge as Dream was disclosed.
What did The Sandman showrunner say about Puck and Destruction?
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “I infuse sex appeal, trickery, psychological depth, and heart into my portrayal of Puck, as I shared on Gleeson’s podcast. Typically, I write with actors in mind, but our Puck is unlike any other comic or potential actor-version of him. Catch me bringing this unique twist to A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Season 2’s comic adaptation.
In the casting for Destruction, Heinberg hinted that many of Sloane’s lines as Destruction were directly from the comics. “He has such a delicate touch and he’s such a compassionate person,” the showrunner said. “That was exactly what we wanted in this role.” When you think of Destruction, particularly during The Song of Orpheus story in the comics, you picture the ultimate world-destroyer. However, his tale, both in the comics and our series, is actually about a soul in turmoil. He yearns to create, not to destroy. Therefore, we needed an actor who embodies so much love, so much happiness, yet appears as a typical soldier.
In addition to the previously mentioned cast members, The Sandman’s second season will feature several new faces. Adrian Lester will portray Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles will embody Delirium, Laurence O’Fuarain will play Thor, Freddie Fox will take on the role of Loki, Clive Russell will be Odin, Ruairi O’Connor will depict Dream’s son Orpheus, Ann Skelly will portray Nuala, Douglas Booth will step into the shoes of Cluracan, Indya Moore will bring Wanda to life, and Steve Coogan will lend his voice to Barnabas the dog.
In July 2025, the second season of The Sandman will debut on Netflix. It will start off with six initial episodes on the 3rd of July, and the remaining five episodes will be released on the 24th of July.
