The Rookie stars tease a possible spinoff idea that we'd totally love to see!

As a dedicated fan of ABC’s “The Rookie,” I find myself eagerly awaiting the seventh season, even though our beloved protagonist Nolan is no longer technically a rookie. The show continues to captivate me with its focus on the personal and professional lives of its diverse ensemble of cops, and I am hopeful for the potential romantic reconciliation between Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford.

Might The Rookie benefit from a fresh perspective, focusing on a mom-centric storyline? Some of its actors seem to think this could be an exciting development for viewers!

As The Rookie gears up for its seventh season, there’s a sense of uncertainty as many shows face cancellation at this stage. However, the title seems misleading since the lead character, Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion), is no longer a newcomer but a seasoned officer. He now mentors rookie cop Celina Jaurez (Lisseth Chavez). The show effectively explores the lives and experiences of these law enforcement officers.

In the latest developments, characters Lucy Chen (played by Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (portrayed by Eric Winter), who shared a romantic connection on the show, have experienced a heartbreaking separation. The ending of season 6 left us with hope that they might reunite, but as of now, their reconciliation remains uncertain.

At the 2024 Comic Con in San Diego, O’Neil and co-stars Mekia Cox (Nyla Harper) and Alyssa Diaz (Angela Lopez) discussed season 7 with TVLine. They expressed their hope that Chen and Bradford had made up, but were tight-lipped about the specifics.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In an exciting update, Diaz revealed that relationship exploration will be a major focus in season 7. However, he issued a friendly warning that the journey might get rough at times.

O’Neill mentioned that we will get a peek into everyone’s homes and observe their family lives, thus bringing more attention to the police involvement.

In Season 6, which aired in 2023, there were just ten episodes instead of the usual number due to Hollywood strikes. As a result, the complex plot of Monica Stevens (Bridget Reagan), a lawyer orchestrating a conspiracy among corrupt cops, had to be condensed. Fortunately, with Season 7 consisting of eighteen episodes scheduled for release in early 2025, there will be ample opportunities to explore the private lives of these law enforcement officers in greater detail.

But there’s bigger news! The ladies hinted at the idea of a spinoff many fans can go with.

The Rookie stars dream up a spinoff

The success of ABC’s hit show “The Rookie” led to an expected spin-off, titled “The Rookie: Feds,” which premiered in 2022 and starred Niecy Nash as the leader of an FBI team. This show featured interconnected episodes with the original “Rookie” series. Regrettably, the Hollywood strikes in 2023 caused its cancellation after only one season.

In the final episode of season 6, some characters from “Feds” made an appearance to emphasize the ongoing relationship between the two shows. However, during Comic Con interviews, Cox and Diaz mentioned that fans have been requesting a spinoff centered around Harper and Lopez.

1. “Cox suggested the title ‘Cop Moms,'” Diaz chimed in, “And here’s our catchphrase: ‘Which job – mom or cop – is riskier?!'” (This version maintains the essence of the original dialogue while being easier to read and more conversational.)

As a dedicated gamer, I find this concept intriguing. The allure of the show lies in observing Harper and Lopez’s dynamic at work, showcasing their exceptional detective skills. Plus, it adds an extra layer of excitement to see them juggle their mom duties. Both women have a reputation for being committed to their cases, even when they’re on the verge of giving birth!

1. Instead of having a significant departure from the primary “Rookie” series, these two female characters could be placed on a specific LAPD unit, providing them an opportunity to prove themselves to unfamiliar colleagues who are unaware of their abilities. This setup would allow for interactions with the main “Rookie” officers and give more emphasis to Lopez and Harper’s off-duty lives.

For now, it may just be a dream that Harper and Lopez team up as cop-mothers on their own show. But the excitement among new fans is palpable, making it an intriguing possibility worth pursuing.

The Rookie season 7 premieres early 2025 on ABC.
