As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for whimsical adventures that tickle my imagination, I must say The Plucky Squire is shaping up to be a truly enchanting journey. With its intricate blend of 2D and 3D gameplay, innovative puzzle mechanics, and captivating narrative, it’s like stepping into a storybook brought to life.
Digital Devolver has spent more than a year building anticipation for an adventure that promises to be one of the most imaginative releases in a while. When developer All Possible Futures delves into a fairy tale fantasy realm and sends its protagonist beyond the storybook boundaries into reality, the outcome is something truly enchanting, as Shacknews recently got the opportunity to explore The Plucky Squire.
In the realm where the tale of The Plucky Squire unfolds, a valiant young knight named Jot repeatedly thwarts the malevolent wizard Humgrump and saves the kingdom. This pattern persists throughout the story. In reality, The Plucky Squire is a beloved series of children’s books that captivates millions of young readers worldwide, among them a boy named Sam. One fateful day, Humgrump discovers his fictional existence and endeavors to alter the narrative by summoning magic to expel Jot from the confines of the book and into the real world. Now, it falls upon Jot to safeguard not only the kingdom but also the entire Plucky Squire series by ensuring its story maintains a cheerful conclusion.
The setting for this story paves the path for some truly inventive concepts in gaming I haven’t encountered in quite a while. The narrative unfolds much like an old-school top-down adventure game. As Jot, you slash through enemies using his sword, steadily marching towards a fated confrontation with Humgrump. Each distinct location corresponds to the size of a page in a children’s picture book. With each transition into a new area, the camera briefly zooms out, offering players a glimpse as the book turns to its next page.
In this game, you’ll come across various types of sections: some will allow you to play interactive adventures, others will show animated images accompanied by voiceovers, and occasionally, there will be something unexpected. For instance, at one point, Jot had to navigate a cliffside, resulting in a 2D platforming segment where players must dodge rolling boulders. Combat is generally hack-and-slash style, but you might stumble upon an unusual encounter every now and then. I initially thought I’d face a fierce honey badger, but instead, I found myself in a section reminiscent of Nintendo’s Punch-Out series.
In no time, Jot starts sensing something odd. Initially, the game’s script provides expository story elements at each stage, which the narrator reads aloud. However, as the game approaches the first meeting with Humgrump, a strange glitch occurs. Words get jumbled and the game world responds accordingly. This is when players are encouraged to use their wit to rearrange some of these scrambled words to alter the game world and solve puzzles. For instance, if Jot is in a “hidden woodland,” he must locate the word “decay” hidden on the other side and replace it with “woodland.” Once the area transforms into a “hidden decay,” the scenery changes, allowing Jot to advance.
Experiencing The Plucky Squire on its own is already captivating, sparking creativity. However, things get even more intriguing after encountering Humgrump. Humgrump sends Jot into the real world, transforming him from a flat character into a fully-developed 3D persona. Real-world scenes function as challenging 3D puzzle-platforming levels. Be prepared for some tense moments if you’re bothered by bugs, as Jot must sneak past Sam’s collection of beetles. Over time, Jot learns to manipulate Humgrump’s magic, enabling him to move between the 2D and 3D realms in specific locations, offering unique platforming challenges. The smooth transition between the hand-drawn 2D artwork and detailed 3D models is quite spectacular, particularly during puzzle sequences. For instance, a 2D area might be obstructed by a hungry rabbit, so the solution could involve finding a carrot stick in the 3D world and transporting it across dimensions.
The way All Possible Futures combines real-world kids’ toys with the imaginative tale of a children’s adventure book is truly amazing. The Plucky Squire captivates instantly with its enchanting visual appeal. I can’t wait to follow this story, as Jot’s adventure seems uniquely different from anything gamers have experienced in recent times. Keep an eye out for The Plucky Squire’s release on Tuesday, September 10, which will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.
As a game enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of playing an early version of this game courtesy of its publisher. Please note that the full, polished experience might differ from what I’ve experienced in this preview build.
