The Perfect Couple's ending teases potential season 2 (but it shouldn't happen)

As a seasoned gamer of the mystery genre, having navigated through countless twists and turns in games like “Detective Grimoire” and “Whodunit: The Interactive Novel”, I must say that “The Perfect Couple” was an intriguing addition to my virtual detective’s casebook. Though it lacked the interactive elements that make gaming so immersive, the series still managed to keep me guessing until the very end.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead from The Perfect Couple series finale.

Revised as a compact and engaging narrative:

Revised for clarity and accessibility: The star-studded but overall compact series’ six episodes, a few key characters come under scrutiny as their long-buried secrets are revealed for their motivation in the murder. One by one, their names are clarified until the series finale reveals the true perpetrator of the crime and the motive that incited them to commit the violent act

Prior to the final episode revealing the murderer’s identity and concluding the main storyline, there seems to be a hint that additional tales might unfold in a potential second season. Although Netflix has categorized The Perfect Couple as a limited series, meaning it is expected to have just one season, history has shown that unexpected events can occur with limited series featuring Nicole Kidman

The Perfect Couple ending, explained

In the last episode, it’s disclosed that Abby Winbury (portrayed by Dakota Fanning) was responsible for Merritt’s (Meghann Fahy) death. By crushing a barbiturate pill that Tom (Jack Reynor) had stolen from Amelia’s (Eve Hewson) unwell mother and adding it to a juice she gave Merritt, Abby made her drugged. Convincing Merritt for a late-night swim, Abby later held her head underwater when Merritt accidentally fell into the water and struggled until her death by drowning at Abby’s hands

Here’s a possible rephrasing: Previously, Abby observed an intriguing playout from the balcony. Tom stood poised to shoot Merrit, Isabel (Isabelle Adjani) escorting the drunk Winbury off the beach before he fires the gun, and a vulnerable Merrit crying and walking on broken glass. Abby decided to “fulfill the task” herself, as she expressed, and kill Merrit before she could have Tags’ (Liev Schreiber) baby, which resets the Winbury trust for another 18 years. Merritt was killed over money

Since Thomas owed Isabel a significant sum of around $2 million, he urgently needed access to his trust fund money. The youngest Winbury son, Will (played by Sam Nivola), turns 18 in just a few weeks, at which point the brothers’ trust fund will be unlocked and they’ll receive their inheritance. However, if Merritt were to have Tag’s child, the trust would essentially disappear for another two decades. Abby took action that the other Winburys wouldn’t in order to secure the release of the money and prevent her husband from being in Isabel’s debt

Why The Perfect Couple season 2 isn’t necessary

Revised version: “The Perfect Marriage” was initially planned as a limited series. By the end of its six episodes, the series concludes with the complete story of Merritt’s murder. Abby, the bride, is arrested, and the rest of the family are no longer suspects. As a result of the dramatic events of Amelia and Billy Howle, various relationships have been fundamentally changed forever, including Greer (Nicole Kidman) and Tag’s marriage and Benji and Amelia, who have officially parted ways

In the concluding part of the series, a jump ahead six months is shown. Amelia, who had pursued zoology, found herself working at a London zoo now. Greer locates her with a manuscript for an upcoming book titled “Your Move“. She explains to Amelia that the book is centered around her, and she won’t go ahead with its publication unless Amelia gives her consent. Greer appears different, displaying warmth and acceptance towards Amelia. Could there be something suspicious in this, or has she finally acknowledged that Amelia isn’t an adversary?

Reimagined The Newlywed Couple

Adapting “The Perfect Couple” with brevity and clarity: The couple has spoken eloquently about their own story. We should respect the integrity of the mini-series and limit its continuation, not leaving open the possibility of a second season in case of exceptional ratings. Close that door behind you! Whatever the story remains to be told with the Winbury family – Greer’s proposition for Amelia, Abby’s murder trial probably, the battle for the trust fund, etc. – is not worth continuing a series that was anchored to the premise of a murder mystery.
