WARNING: Major spoilers for The Perfect Couple episode 2 are below.
After it has been established that Amelia discovered Merritt’s body, it’s now time for her to open up. At the police station, she admits it was all her fault. A flashback sequence from the previous night reveals a heated argument between Amelia and Merritt on the beach. Amelia was upset because Merritt had been keeping something from her, which caused Merritt to cry and leave. So, what’s this secret Merritt has been hiding? Let’s see
Merritt and Tag were having an affair
On the shore, the authorities discover Merritt’s cellphone and a male coat, leading to a significant revelation. When the investigator talks to Abby, she reveals that Merritt had relationships with numerous men. While we can’t verify the accuracy of this claim, it does shed light on something important – one man Merrit was definitely linked to was Tag. In another flashback scene, we witness Merritt wearing a bracelet purchased by Tag, suggesting an affair between them. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean Tag is her killer; there are other plausible suspects in the case as well
The authorities searched the room where Merrit had been residing, only to be disrupted by Tag, who attempted to minimize the incident. He proposed that Merrit’s demise was an accidental drowning; however, Detective Henry remained skeptical. She hinted to him that she believed Merrit had struck up a rapport with one of the wedding guests, which may have resulted in her death
Following some personal time with her folks, Amelia notices the Winbury clan in deep discussion over a significant matter. Given their prestigious standing, Greer hints that her associates advise issuing a public statement. Going as far as to propose Merritt’s demise might have been self-inflicted, an idea Amelia vehemently opposes. The whole situation certainly raises eyebrows, and Amelia grows increasingly uneasy when Benji later presents her with a non-disclosure agreement to sign
Shooter is suspicious
Benji visits his closest buddy, Shooter, but their discussion takes an unusual turn. Shooter appears deeply troubled concerning Merritt, and when he’s by himself, he contacts someone, expressing a strong desire to speak with them. His actions hint that he might be planning to depart from Nantucket, as he retrieves his passport from a drawer
As a fervent admirer of this captivating narrative, let me recount the events from my perspective: I discovered that the police matched the fingerprints found on Merritt’s phone to none other than the infamous Shooter. In hot pursuit, they eventually apprehended him aboard a ferry as he attempted a hasty escape from town. Meanwhile, ensconced in the cozy confines of a hotel room, Isabel and Tom found themselves entwined in an intimate moment. With a heartfelt declaration, Tom professed his love for her. Unfortunately, her feelings did not reciprocate; instead, she clarified that their relationship was but a fleeting affair devoid of any deeper commitment
At home, Tom encounters Abby preparing to depart, and informs her that the authorities won’t let them go. Abby explains she has already consulted with the police, eager to return home for a hair appointment and some relaxation time. This behavior puzzles Tom, leading to an argument between them. (Paraphrased)
In a private conversation that evening, Tag confides in Amelia about his support for her relationship with Benji and expresses his desire to avoid any awkwardness between them. Given their shared history, it’s clear he is aware of the affair with Merritt. He describes Merritt as “exceptional,” which causes a rift between them. So, what response might Amelia give? In the end, she drives to the police station, disclosing that Tag and Merritt were involved in an affair
Merritt’s other big secret
The final moments of the show reveal additional glimpses into the past as events become more complex. On the night Merritt died at the beach, she confided in Amelia that she was expecting a child. Additionally, it’s shown that Greer confronted Tag about the bracelet, since he had given it to Merritt. At present, my top two suspects are Greer and Tag. It could be that Greer discovered the affair and Merritt’s pregnancy, and in an attempt to maintain their image, she may have hired someone to take Merritt’s life. For now, these are mere theories, but episode 2 certainly lays the groundwork for this possibility
But what will happen in The Perfect Couple episode 3? Keep watching to find out!
