As a devoted fan of DC Comics and their intricate narrative tapestry, I must say that the introduction of Sofia Falcone in The Penguin has been nothing short of captivating! Cristin Milioti’s portrayal of this complex character is truly remarkable, and she manages to breathe new life into a character with such a rich comic-book history.
In “The Penguin,” a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022), both Colin Farrell’s title character and Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, take center stage. Although we met Oz in The Batman, Sofia makes her debut here in The Penguin. Over the first two episodes, we’ve learned a lot about her character and how she differs from her comic book counterpart. We now know that Sofia spent a significant period at Arkham Asylum, and we’re starting to understand why she ended up there.
Here is everything you might want to know why Sofia Falcone was institutionalized at Arkham Asylum.
Who did Sofia Falcone kill to end up in Arkham Asylum?
Arkham Asylum, a fictional mental health facility found in Gotham City within DC Comics and related content, has been a recurring setting. In these comic books, Sofia debuted in the 1996-97 Batman: The Long Halloween series and is infamous as a serial killer called the Hangman.
In the series “The Penguin,” Sofia is portrayed as a ruthless serial killer known as “the Hangman.” Her character is depicted as volatile and violent, suggesting that she remains mentally unstable. During Episode 2, it’s revealed that she has murdered at least seven women, leading to her incarceration in Arkham Asylum. She continues to grapple with the trauma of her time there, experiencing recurring nightmares and hallucinations about the place. Moreover, Sofia harbors a deep-seated grudge against the Falcone family for their failure to free her from the asylum sooner. The only person who visited her during her confinement and vowed to rescue her was her brother, Alberto. This commitment from Alberto fuels Sofia’s desire for revenge against whoever took her brother’s life.
In the given episode, Sofia mistakenly assumes that her subordinate, Castillo, is a spy for the enemy Maroni family and the one responsible for her brother’s death. Later on, she forms an alliance with Oz, unaware that he is actually the person who killed her brother.
In the comic books, Sofia’s usual method of operation appears to differ from what we see in most cases. Instead of primarily targeting women, her victims are officers from the Gotham City Police Department who were once connected with Harvey Dent (or Two-Face). However, Harvey Dent has not made an appearance in the Batman universe created by Reeves as of now.
In a recent press meeting for The Penguin, executive producer Dylan Clark hinted at the creation of another series. When The Direct asked about a potential legal drama centering around Dent, Reeves replied that such speculation aligns with their ongoing discussions.
