The Penguin Showrunner Compares Batman Series to Scarface, New Photos Revealed

As a longtime gamer and comic book enthusiast, I’m beyond excited for “The Penguin” series, especially with Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oz Cobblepot. The prospect of delving deeper into the origins of this iconic Batman villain is a tantalizing proposition that has me on the edge of my seat.

According to lead writer and showrunner Lauren LeFranc, the TV series “The Penguin,” headed by Colin Farrell, is described as having elements similar to the “Scarface” storyline.

An upcoming series will be a continuation of the 2022 “The Batman” film, where Robert Pattinson played the brooding title character. Directed by Matt Reeves and produced by Dylan Clark, this new project intends to explore more of the “Batman” universe, beginning with a show centered around Oz Cobblepot, the Gotham villain portrayed by Colin Farrell in the film.

I’m thrilled to pieces as I watch my favorite actor prepare to slip back into The Penguin’s iconic prosthetics for the upcoming series. Entertainment Weekly has generously given us a sneak peek with some fresh images for this intriguing crime drama.

What to expect in The Penguin?

The Penguin’s journey to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld will be portrayed in an upcoming limited series, providing viewers with a glimpse into how he transforms into the notorious crime lord he is recognized for. According to LeFranc’s interview with EW, this series can be thought of as a “Scarface” story and a depiction of Oz’s ascension to power before he reaches his peak.

The showrunner added, “We’re delving into Oz’s domain. Life in the city’s underworld is our reality. Oz is a powerful figure with questionable intentions. He’s both cunning and calculated, but also unpredictably impulsive. His actions are hard to forecast.”

Later on, LeFranc disclosed that they had produced a connection between the two movies, specifically alluding to Reeves’ planned Batman sequel. “We’re essentially jumping right into the second film that Matt has prepared for us.”

As a seasoned movie critic with years of experience under my belt, I have had the pleasure of analyzing countless cast lists. However, this one, in particular, stands out to me for its impressive lineup of talented actors. Joining Farrell are Rhenzy Feliz, who brought Victor Aguilar to life with such depth and nuance in “Midway” and “Runaways”; Cristin Milioti, whose exceptional performance in “The Good Place” and “How I Met Your Mother” left audiences in awe; Michael Zegen, known for his memorable roles in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fargo”; and the versatile Michael Kelly from “House of Cards” and “The Tick.”

The eight-episode HBO Original series is set to arrive on both HBO and Max this September.
