In HBO’s “The Penguin” series, renowned actors like Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti delivered outstanding performances. However, it was missing an appearance from Robert Pattinson as Batman. Two months after the series finale, showrunner Lauren LeFranc has spoken out about why the Dark Knight was absent from the miniseries.
‘Batman can’t be everywhere,’ says The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc
During a recent conversation, a well-known TV scriptwriter shared an interesting insight: In contrast to expectations, Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman did not influence The Penguin series directly because the character does not have an ongoing presence or any extraordinary powers.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Lauren LeFranc emphasized that Matt, their show’s creator, made it clear from the start: Gotham is a vast city, and Batman can’t possibly be present everywhere. Unlike Spiderman, he doesn’t have a sixth sense to alert him. So, just because we don’t see Batman on our series doesn’t mean he’s oblivious or indifferent to what’s happening in the city. Despite LeFranc’s confirmation, it’s clear that the Penguin’s actions within the series will echo through Gotham City, creating a stir substantial enough to catch Batman’s notice. In essence, she pointed out that the fallout from events in Gotham City will continue into the next movie.
Excitedly speaking as a die-hard fan here, Colin Farrell himself has verified that The Penguin will make an appearance in around five to six scenes of Robert Pattinson’s upcoming Batman sequel. Production on this highly-anticipated movie is set to kick off later this year. Previously slated for release in October 2026, the sequel – tentatively titled The Batman Part II – now appears to have been pushed back to 2027. In a recent online discussion, director James Gunn debunked rumors about delays, confirming that Matt Reeves had wrapped up the scripting phase for the project.
Beyond that, specifics about the upcoming sequel are still being kept secret. However, it is confirmed that Robert Pattinson’s Batman and Colin Farrell’s Penguin will certainly clash in director Matt Reeves’ forthcoming DC movie, scheduled for a theatre release on October 1, 2027.
