As a fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Gotham, I must say that The Penguin has certainly lived up to my expectations! The first episode was a thrilling rollercoaster ride filled with twists, turns, and unexpected moments.

In the same world as Matt Reeves’ 2022 movie The Batman, the series titled “The Penguin” premiered on HBO on September 19th. Viewers are curious about how Episode 1 ends. The story unfolds a week after the events of The Batman, following the Riddler’s actions that submerged a significant part of Gotham City. The Riddler not only wreaked havoc but also killed Carmine Falcone, causing a power struggle in Gotham’s criminal underworld. In “The Penguin”, Oswald “Oz” Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) aims to seize control of this power vacuum, but encounters resistance from all quarters, including Carmine’s troubled daughter, Sofia (portrayed by Cristin Milioti).

The Penguin Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Dies?

Who dies at the end of The Penguin Episode 1?

Alberto dies in The Penguin Episode 1.

At first, Alberto, Carmine’s troubled son who stood to inherit his criminal business due to his struggles with alcohol, drugs, gambling, and other vices, was the apparent heir. However, Oz murders him, and for the remainder of the episode, he frantically tries to hide his crime. He picks up a stuttering teenager named Victor from the streets, having caught him attempting to steal his car with friends, and pressures him into helping him dispose of Alberto’s body at a junkyard. Later, Oz ponders over eliminating Victor before deciding to keep him close instead. This decision ultimately proves beneficial as Victor demonstrates his value in the following scenes.

In the heat of the instant, I unintentionally took Alberto’s life. As I came to my senses, I understood my grave error and set about organizing events to ensure my own survival amidst the fallout. I arranged an alibi with Eve, a woman I regularly visit in her profession. When the inevitable call from Alberto’s family arrived, I appeared calm and seemingly prepared. However, their purpose was not to interrogate me about Alberto but to inform me they were closing down my operation. The shock deepened when I found Sofia present – she had been released from Arkham.

In the comic books, Sofia is known as a notorious serial killer referred to as The Hangman. It appears that The Penguin’s portrayal of her shares some commonalities in terms of backstory. Throughout the storyline, Sofia shows genuine concern for her brother and correctly assumes that Oz is involved in Alberto’s sudden disappearance. Towards the end of the episode, Sofia resorts to torturing Oz to extract information about what happened to Alberto. However, Oz manages to execute his plan, and Victor assists him in shifting the blame for Alberto’s death onto someone else.

Why does Oz kill Alberto?

Previously stated, in a moment of anger, Oz ends up killing Alberto following Alberto’s offensive remarks. Later, guided by his mother’s advice, Oz seizes the opportunity that presented itself. After watching the 1946 film noir romance “Gilda,” starring Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford, Oz recognizes the need for a fall guy. Eventually, he locates this scapegoat.

Who gets the blame for Alberto’s murder?

Salvatore Maroni, Falcone’s one-time biggest rival, and his family are framed for Alberto’s murder.

In prison, Oz confronts Maroni and reveals his intention to change allegiances. Before departing, Oz returns the ring he retrieved from Falcone and from Alberto’s remains. Meanwhile, while Oz is being tormented, Victor uses a car to smuggle Alberto’s body onto the Falcone family estate. As Sofia notices that her brother’s finger is missing, she deduces that the Maronis are behind his death – a conclusion that Oz had aimed for all along.
