The Patapon developers kickstarted a new rhythm-action roguelike game: Ratatan

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of Ratatan has me genuinely excited. The original Patapon was a unique gem in my collection, and the prospect of a new rhythm-action roguelike from the same creators is tantalizing. The randomized powerups and rewards each game start are an intriguing twist that adds an element of unpredictability to the gameplay.

The classic handheld game Patapon for the PlayStation Portable has a new sequel titled Ratatan, which continues the tradition of having a humorous moniker.

New rhythm-action roguelike game: Ratatan

Just like its forerunner, Ratatan will offer a unique blend of a rhythm-based gameplay and side-scrolling action. The players are expected to pay close attention to the distinct and nuanced rhythms in the music to make progress.

What sets it apart is the method it uses for pick-ups, as the power-ups and incentives players gather during gameplay will always be randomly selected when a fresh game begins.

The players’ mission is to defeat enemies by sending commands to their troops in the right rhythm.

Absolutely, the term “players” is used in plural here since Ratatan will offer a multiplayer experience. Specifically, it’s going to include an online cooperative mode designed for up to four players simultaneously. This means you can navigate levels together as a team and, well, there might be some friendly teasing towards the one person who tends to struggle with simple rhythms!

Developers of Ratatan

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Tokyo Virtual Theory, a renowned developer team, is bringing us their latest creation. Interestingly enough, they’re collaborating with none other than Hiroyuki Kotani, the creative genius who breathed life into the original Patapon series!

Following a highly productive Kickstarter drive just recently, Ratatan amassed sufficient resources for the commencement of production.

Tokyo Virtual Theory is going to use their own engine for this project: the Theory Engine.

The game aims to provide players with a swift and reliable connection and gameplay, ensuring an uninterrupted multiplayer experience free from frustrating pauses or bothersome latency discrepancies. However, we’ll have to wait until the game is released to see if it lives up to this expectation…

Players act as the Ratatan, using magical instruments to deliver different commands to the armies of Cobun to attack the enemies. In addition to attack and defence rhythmic sequences, there are also actions that allow the Ratatan to move freely, with unique skills for each character, further deepening the musicality of the game.

Tokyo Virtual Theory stated in a press release.

Without a doubt, the game is set to launch on PC. There are also hints suggesting that other platforms might be involved too; however, the developers’ ultimate choice regarding these platforms remains uncertain at this point.

Ratatan is set to release in April 2025. We’re stoked!
