The Old Guard 2’s Netflix Viewership Could Mean Good News for Part 3

The Old Guard 2 proves to be a huge hit on Netflix

The second installment of “The Old Guard” was released on Netflix on July 2, 2025, but received negative reviews from critics. For example, Kelechi Ehenulo from Empire Magazine described it as “a confusing, sequel-focused disaster that fails to heal with time.” Despite this, the film’s popularity among Netflix viewers has made a third movie possible. After its premiere, The Old Guard 2 quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched movies, reaching number one on their Global Top 10 list for the week of June 30 to July 6 with a total of 37.5 million views and 66.8 million hours of viewing time. Previously, Netflix has approved sequels for popular movies that didn’t fare well with critics. The Kissing Booth film series starring Joey King and Jacob Elordi is a clear illustration of this trend. Given the strong audience reaction to the second installment, it seems logical that Netflix could move forward with The Old Guard 3.

The sequel to “The Old Guard” concludes with an unresolved ending, hinting at potential continuation in a third film. Recently, Charlize Theron, who plays Andromache “Andy” of Scythia and is also a producer, shared with Variety that they will temporarily pause their work on the franchise. She stated, “We’ll take a break, catch our breath, and then return to decide what happens next.

Additionally, Victoria Mahoney, the director of the second film, mentioned during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that she won’t be directing the potential third installment. However, she remains optimistic that “the third one will be fun and kick some serious goals.
