As a dedicated fan of “The Old Guard,” I can’t contain my excitement over Charlize Theron’s recent update about the upcoming sequel. It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for any news regarding this highly anticipated Netflix original film, and finally, we have some reassurance from the star and producer herself!
For fans of “The Old Guard,” it’s been a long wait for news about the release of the next installment. But your patience is now paying off! Charlize Theron, who stars in and produces the Netflix original film, has shared some exciting updates.
At Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project Block Party in July, Marc Malkin from Variety spoke with the Oscar-winning actress and shared firsthand information about the project. If you’ve been curious about the progress of “The Old Guard 2,” your question has been answered!
Theron gives fans a heads-up that the Netflix release of “The Old Guard 2” is imminent, even if she doesn’t provide an exact timeline. The production wrapped up two years prior, but she shared insights into the reasons for the delay in its post-production and distribution.
The Old Guard 2 coming ‘soon’ to Netflix
The writer and actor strikes caused the film and TV industry to almost come to a halt for several months starting in the second half of 2023. Furthermore, it seems that the post-production process for the sequel has been paused due to shifts happening behind the scenes at Netflix.
Here’s what Theron said about the status of The Old Guard sequel:
Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.
Dan Lin’s appointment as the new Netflix Film Chief in February 2024 marked a transition from Scott Stuber, who previously led the streaming giant’s film department. This change may have resulted in delays for some of Netflix’s upcoming movies as they adjusted to the new leadership.
I’m thrilled to share that Theron’s recent announcement indicates we’re full steam ahead on completing The Old Guard 2. The actress herself expressed her excitement, sharing that she truly enjoys this project and finds it “really good.” Having worked on sequels before, Theron was clear that she’d only commit to making the Netflix sequel if they could create something extraordinary. Based on her comments to Variety, it seems they’ve managed to do just that!
Previously stated, The Old Guard 2 started shooting in June 2022 and ultimately finished in September 2022, following a production halt due to the pandemic and a set fire. Netflix approved the project back in August 2021. Victoria Mahoney helmed the sequel’s direction, with Uma Thurman and Henry Golding added to the ensemble cast.
Last year, Marc Evans, the producer, hinted that the conclusion of the second “Old Guard” film could possibly lead to a third instalment, potentially turning it into another trilogy on Netflix. however, let’s focus on completing and watching the upcoming sequel before we speculate about a potential third part.
