Charlize Theron shared during an interview with Variety on the red carpet that she hadn’t started filming for The Odyssey but would be departing soon to begin. The interviewer inquired about Charlize Theron’s plans for embodying Circe, the goddess of sorcery on film. Theron explained, “I guess I’ll discuss it with Chris [Nolan], and we’ll see how it unfolds. It’s incredibly daunting. Since I’d be joining the production last, I’ll essentially be the newcomer. Everyone else will already know their roles, but me.

Later on, Theron was inquired about her last reading of The Odyssey, the famous epic poem by Homer. The actress responded with a casual laugh, “Wow, it’s been quite some time.

In Greek mythology, Circe is a significant figure, typically seen as either a goddess or a nymph. She has roots in older stories, but is most famously depicted in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. During Odysseus’ journey home from the Trojan War to his island of Ithaca, he crosses paths with Circe. After she transforms some of his soldiers into pigs, Odysseus receives divine instructions on how to undo this transformation.

In February 2025, production for Christopher Nolan’s rendition of The Odyssey began. He penned the script himself, inspired by the classic poem. A stellar lineup of actors includes Matt Damon portraying Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Zendaya, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, and Benny Safdie.

The Odyssey is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 17, 2026.
