The Newest Part Of The Dark Pictures Anthology Launches You Into Space: Here’s Directive 8020

Following the conclusion of the first season of “The Dark Pictures Anthology” with “Devil in Me”, Supermassive Games has now revealed the initial installment of its second season: “Directive 8020“.

Cinematic, Choice-Based Horror

The Dark Pictures Anthology, crafted by Supermassive Games – creators of Until Dawn and The Quarry – is a collection of horror games that offer a cinematic, interactive experience with a focus on choices. Players will navigate through various characters, aiming to keep them all alive as they progress. You’ll find yourself alternating between exploring, watching cutscenes, and participating in quick-time events, always unsure if your decision could result in a character’s untimely demise.

Unlike Supermassive’s traditional long-form games, The Dark Pictures Anthology offers options for single player or multiplayer sessions. In the multiplayer version, each player will encounter distinct game sections and cinematics, making the outcome of the story reliant on collaboration between players.

Each segment within this anthology tells its unique tale. The initial installment, titled “Men of Medan,” was launched in 2019, which was subsequently followed by “Little Hope” and “House of Ashes.” The series concluded with “The Devil in Me” in 2022. Now, the studio has unveiled the first game of the second season and the fifth installment overall, named “Directive 8020.”

A First Look At The Game

This game currently boasts its own Steam page, which characterizes it as an “immersive sci-fi horror journey that combines nerve-wracking survival mechanics with impactful decisions and a narrative that unfolds differently based on your choices.

The narrative centers on a dystopian era when our planet is perishing, making space colonization the last resort for humankind. However, the colony vessel “Cassiopeia” crashes onto an enigmatic planet and finds itself pursued by an alien predator that can imitate its victims, which seems to blend Supermassive’s distinctive gameplay mechanics with the idea of John Carpenter’s film The Thing.

A story reveal trailer has also been published:

The game will officially become available on October 2nd, however, pre-orders can be placed as early as June. Preordering gives you instant access to the Curator’s Cut, a mode typically accessible three to four months post-release. This single-player feature lets you replay the game through various protagonists at distinct times after your initial playthrough. The game will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.

A Brand New Multiplayer Mode

The game referred to as Directive 8020 is expected to be the initial installment in the series that introduces a 5-player team-up mode over the internet. Earlier games in the series only offered a 2-player online cooperative mode and a local multiplayer option for up to 5 players, where each player would select a character and pass the controller whenever their chosen characters appeared.

It appears that Supermassive Games is trying out different gameplay styles and horror genres, notably focusing on body horror and space horror within the game titled “Directive 8020“.
