As a die-hard NCIS fan with a soft spot for Leroy Jethro Gibbs, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming prequel series, NCIS: Origins. The idea of witnessing the early days of our beloved character, before he became the legend we know today, is tantalizing.
In this series, Gibbs is a character adrift, grappling with a life that deviates significantly from what he had envisioned for himself. His involvement with NIS serves as a crucial lifeline, guiding him through his journey. Yet, viewers of the iconic show won’t recognize the man they have grown to admire. Instead, they will witness the man who came before the legend, before he assembled his team and evolved into the agent and leader they know today.
As a gamer, when chatting with TV Insider, NCIS: Origins co-showrunner David J. North highlighted an intriguing aspect about the characterization that will stand out from the get-go: “The Gibbs we’ve written for ages has mastered the art of suppressing his emotions. But this Gibbs isn’t there yet.”
It seems we might be dealing with a more unpredictable Gibbs, given the heavy burden he now bears. His sorrow is deep, and he’s venturing into uncharted territory, but his relentless pursuit of justice will persist. Although specifics about his initial case are being kept confidential, North has hinted at what we might anticipate.
A string of linked murders forms the crux of a two-hour debut episode, and North hinted that this case will deeply affect our characters, making for an engaging season opener as we meet them for the first time. However, it’s Gibb’s response that promises to be most captivating.
As stated by co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal, “Gibbs finds himself thrust into a new role that overwhelms him initially, yet somehow this situation seems custom-designed for his unique abilities, providing him with a chance to truly excel.”
Based on his personal history with tragic incidents like murder and mysterious deaths within his family, it’s probable that he might become deeply involved in this case due to his own past struggles. Just as a flashback episode of NCIS demonstrated, Gibbs sought justice for such tragedies, and in the prequel, he will strive to bring the same closure to those who have suffered loss at the hands of another’s actions.
