What is The Monkey about?
Following their discovery of an old, eerie monkey toy belonging to their father hidden away in the attic, identical twins Hal and Bill experience a series of chilling deaths in their vicinity. To escape the unsettling presence, they decide to get rid of the toy and pursue individual lives. However, when the mysterious deaths reappear, the brothers feel forced to reunite and undertake a journey to eradicate the cursed monkey once and for all.
In the show “The Monkey,” you’ll find actors like Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy in the main cast.
As a fervent admirer, let me share that I had the pleasure of learning that Perkins was the one who penned the screenplay for “The Monkey.” Delving into Perkins’ impressive body of work, you might recognize titles such as “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” from 2015, “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” in 2016, “Gretel & Hansel” from 2020, and most recently, the captivating “Longlegs,” featuring none other than Nicolas Cage, which premiered in 2024.
In the creation of the film, James Wan, Michael Clear, Jason Cloth, and Dave Caplan take on the roles of producers, while Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, Chris Ferguson, Peter Luo, Nancy Xu, and John Friedberg assume the positions of executive producers.
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Perkins explained the film’s unique blend of dark humor, saying, “Imagine if it’s a comedy…Here’s this monkey that doesn’t seem to be doing anything. It’s not like M3GAN, it doesn’t attack. Yet it’s evil simply by existing. Strange events occur because of no particular reason, other than they do. Its presence leads to people dying in bizarre ways…I’ve seen people die in truly peculiar, insane ways. Death happens regardless of whether there’s a monkey or not. What if we could confront the fact that everyone dies with a smile – and what a mad, surrealist idea! You will die; we all will. That’s pretty crazy stuff. To approach it as a comedy seemed incredibly fitting.
The Monkey will be released in United States theaters on February 21, 2025, from Neon.
