‘The makers easily cut out the portions of the heroine’: Sai Pallavi on her fight against less screen time in male-centric films

As a seasoned admirer of Sai Pallavi, I find her approach to her craft truly inspiring. Her journey in the film industry is not only marked by her exceptional acting skills but also by her unwavering commitment to ensuring equal representation for female characters, even in male-centric films.

Prior to its Diwali premiere, Sai Pallavi’s movie Amaran has already earned praise. She plays Indhu Rebecca Varghese, the widow of Major Mukund Varadarajan in this biopic. Lately, the multitalented actress shared her concerns about working on a male-focused project and discussed her strategies to secure equal screen time.

In a chat with Behindwoods, Sai Pallavi shared that at first, she had reservations about starring in a movie like Amaran, which was a biopic and predominantly focused on male characters. She expressed her concerns due to potential limited screen time, as many directors often omit well-filmed scenes featuring the female lead in such productions.

In contrast, regarding Amaran’s role, the diva disclosed, securing a written promise from director Rajkumar ahead of time, that her part would not be reduced under any conditions, even before she joined the project.

In her own words, Sai Pallavi expressed, “Typically in biopics or films centered around males, directors tend to omit the heroine’s scenes, using time constraints as an excuse. I decided to address this with director Rajkumar of Amaran by requesting him to guarantee in writing that he wouldn’t make such omissions regarding my character, Indhu Rebecca Varghese. He granted me this liberty and assured me that the importance of my role in Amaran is equal to that of Major Mukund Varadarajan’s.

During another part of her interview, Sai Pallavi discussed how selecting specific roles can sometimes pose a unique challenge for her as an actress due to its impact on her career. She acknowledged that her modest style of dressing and professional work habits may not always align with typical standards within the movie industry.

Nevertheless, Sai Pallavi pointed out that she’s not overly concerned if this situation diminishes her workload. What she finds unattractive, though, is the growth that arises when she acts against her own established principles.

During the conclusion of the interview, Sai Pallavi acknowledged her tendency to choose roles with a greater degree of complexity compared to others.

The actress expressed her thoughts, stating, “Playing complex roles aids actors in their growth by providing a process. This maintains enthusiasm and fosters the creation of magic. However, over time, portraying common characters may become monotonous, potentially leading to actor burnout.

For those unfamiliar, the movie titled “Amaran” featuring Sivakarthikeyan alongside Sai Pallavi is set to premiere in theaters on Halloween of 2024, that is, October 31st.
