For centuries, art and fashion have influenced each other significantly. Yet, it’s uncommon to find a thorough examination of their connection. Designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Marni, Loewe, Prada often incorporate artworks into their runway shows. Similarly, influential artists are frequently considered trendsetters in broader culture and style. In a groundbreaking move, the Musée du Louvre-Lens, a branch of the famous museum, aims to delve deeply into this relationship with an exhibition called “Clothing as Art: Dressing Like an Artist.”

Each room offers an intricate look into the world of art, starting with the political statements made through the clothing worn by painters (as depicted in “Rosa Bonheur in her studio”), moving on to the designer’s scissors like those used by Yves Saint Laurent for his SS88 Couture collection, which was dedicated to various artists such as Georges Braque and Van Gogh. As visitors move from one room to another, they find themselves navigating mirrors reminiscent of Alexander McQueen’s 2001 runway show “Voss.” These unexpected reflections aim to encourage viewers to ponder the significance of their own attire.

This display showcases the innovative collaborations among current artists, for instance Marc Bohan from Dior, sculptress Niki de Saint Phalle, as well as Andy Warhol. It delves into how various contemporary art forms are growing more interconnected as they evolve.
