The Lincoln Lawyer season 4 teased with unexpected season 3 cliffhanger

Mickey is being framed for Sam Scales’ murder

In the concluding sequence of The Lincoln Lawyer‘s third season, Mickey experiences a profound sense of relief following the successful resolution of Julian’s case. By working tirelessly, he managed to secure an acquittal for the innocent man and exposed a complex web of corruption that culminated in DEA Agent James De Marco’s murder of Glory Days. After the grueling courtroom standoff, Mickey and his team mark their victory with a festive meal together.

As Mickey drives home from dinner in his convertible, a police officer stops him. When the officer notices blood leaking from Mickey’s vehicle, the situation escalates. Mickey is taken into custody, and the officer discovers the lifeless body of Sam Scales in the trunk. This revelation is just as surprising to Mickey as it is to us, the viewers. It’s evident that Mickey is being set up for this murder.

In the seventh episode of season 3, Lorna assumed Sam Scales’ (previously seen in a season 2 episode) latest case. Previously, he was arrested due to misappropriating over $200,000 out of the $300,000 he raised for donating gift cards to striking workers in Los Angeles. Now facing jail time for wire fraud and theft, Lorna managed to negotiate a lighter sentence for him, which included probation and repaying the stolen money.

In a conversation outside the courtroom, Sam informs Mickey and their group that he can’t repay the loan because he owes his last investor an excessive amount of money. Essentially, he explains that if he doesn’t pay up, it could cost him his life. Unsurprisingly, Mickey isn’t thrilled by Sam’s revelation as he too is indebted to the Haller team. Now, whoever is pursuing Sam seems determined to bring down not only Sam but also Mickey in a single catastrophic blow.

Although an official announcement for season 4 of “The Lincoln Lawyer” hasn’t been made following the release of season 3 on October 17, it appears highly likely that the show will be renewed due to indications of ongoing talks and Neve Campbell’s confirmation of returning full-time for season 4.

Given the cliffhanger ending in season 3 finale, it appears likely that a hypothetical fourth season could pick up directly from the fifth Mickey Haller book, “The Gods of Guilt,” and proceed to the sixth titled “The Law of Innocence,” published in 2020. Here is an official summary for the book from Connelly’s website:

Defense attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by police, who find the body of a client in the trunk of his Lincoln. Haller is charged with murder and can’t make the exorbitant $5 million bail slapped on him by a vindictive judge.

Mickey elects to defend himself and must strategize and build his defense from his jail cell in the Twin Towers Correctional Center in downtown Los Angeles, all the while looking over his shoulder–as an officer of the court he is an instant target.

Mickey knows he’s been framed. Now, with the help of his trusted team, including Harry Bosch, he has to figure out who has plotted to destroy his life and why. Then he has to go before a judge and jury and prove his innocence.

In the upcoming season 4 of “The Lincoln Lawyer”, while the main narrative will be inspired by the book, there are bound to be adjustments made specifically for the television show, as has been the case since the beginning. A character like Harry Bosch, who is a significant figure in the books, is not present in the Netflix series, although it’s conceivable that this could change (one can never tell!). However, it seems unlikely at this point. The unique aspect of season 4 will be Mickey Haller taking on a new role: defending himself and working to clear his own name. Keep an eye out for further news and updates as they become available!
