The Librarians: Next Chapter has a new home, here's where the show will air!

As a longtime fan of The Librarians franchise, I must say I was initially disheartened when I heard that The CW was cancelling practically every original series they once had, including my beloved Librarians. But then, the news of its return to TNT, where it all began, brought a wave of excitement washing over me like a magical artifact unleashed in 1847!

The sequel series, “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” will be moving to a different location! Discover its new destination!

It’s not hidden that The CW has faced several challenges in recent years. The sale to Nexstar brought about a fresh approach for the network, which includes canceling most of its original shows, including those from the Arrowverse and Walker.

It seems that The CW is currently favoring scripted shows from foreign countries, specifically Canada and the UK, such as “Wild Cards” and the upcoming series “Joan”. Instead, their programming leans towards reality TV and sports.

One of the upcoming shows this fall includes “The Librarians: The Next Chapter,” a continuation of the franchise which originally started in 2004 with a TV movie titled “The Librarian.” In this film, Noah Wyle played a scholar who took on a role as an employee at the New York Metropolitan Library, but his true mission was to search for magical artifacts worldwide. This series proved popular and led to two follow-ups.

2014 marked the commencement of a recurring show titled “The Librarians“. In this series, Wyle occasionally appeared as his character Flynn Carsen, who assisted a group of agents in their transformation into guardians of the Library and its treasures. The show ran for four seasons before concluding in 2018.

Fans were thrilled when they learned that The CW was planning a follow-up series, named The Librarians: The Next Chapter. This upcoming series centers around Callum McGowan, an old librarian who inadvertently releases a surge of dark magic from 1847. To rectify the situation, he must join forces with a fresh team of Librarians to put a stop to it.

In the upcoming season, we have Jessica Green, Olivia Morris, and Bluey Robinson joining the cast, alongside Christian Kane reprising his role from the initial series. Originally set to premiere on CW this fall, it has been removed from their schedule, but fret not, fans of Librarians, as the show is indeed making a comeback on a well-known platform!

The Librarians: The Next Chapter is headed home

According to TVLine, “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” will be making its way back to TNT for broadcast in 2025. This marks a comeback for the network in terms of airing scripted dramas, as it appeared they were stepping away from this genre.

1) The show is moving to TNT, and as reported by Deadline, it has also been renewed for a second season. This could indicate that CW Studios might collaborate on more joint productions with other networks in the future.

Dean Devlin, the show’s creator, was happy about it as he told Deadline how the deal came about.

It all started with a phone call I had with Sam Linsky at TNT. He’s been with the show from the very, very beginning in 2004 and I said it was very odd to be working on The Librarians without working with him. He said they were all really jealous about the show. Then about five or six weeks ago, he called and said, ‘Do you think there’s any chance you could move the show from The CW to us, and I said, ‘I don’t know but that seems kind of amazing if that could happen’. I had a phenomenal conversation with the people at The CW, it took a little gymnastics, but they were really supportive. They understood that the idea of bringing the show home was an amazing opportunity.

Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, gave his own statement on the jump to TNT.

The CW is incredibly proud to have worked alongside Dean Devlin and the entire team at Electric Entertainment to create an extraordinary continuation of The Librarians franchise. We are thrilled that the series’ original network TNT loves it as much as we do and saw great value bringing it to their audience. It’s a first for CW Studios and we cannot wait for fans to experience this incredible next chapter.

Additionally, Devlin mentioned that they’re actively seeking a streaming platform companion for the series. At present, The Librarians from 2014 can be found on the CWTV site; however, its longevity on this platform remains uncertain.

We’re only going to begin shopping now. Obviously, this move was so gigantic that it kind of occupied all of our thoughts, so even when we talked about what do we do about streaming and AVOD, it was like ‘Shut up’. But that’s the next thing we do, begin talking to streamers.

Moving the show to TNT again feels more appropriate, considering it’s where the series originally launched. Additionally, TNT appears to be reviving its interest in scripted dramas, which is exciting news for many. Therefore, The CW might find themselves losing a series, but TNT could benefit by acquiring a new show with a dedicated fanbase.

Even though we don’t know the exact release date yet, it seems that “The Librarians: The Next Chapter” is staying true to its title by returning to its familiar setting for fresh journeys.

The Librarians is streaming on CWTV and the CW App.
