As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia and a dash of disappointment upon hearing about the scrapped dungeon-maker feature in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Growing up, I spent countless hours crafting intricate levels in Super Mario Maker, and the thought of being able to do something similar within the expansive world of Hyrule was nothing short of exhilarating.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is nearly upon us, bringing about the first new 2D Zelda game in over a decade. Starring Zelda as its protagonist, Echoes of Wisdom’s gameplay primarily revolves around conjuring creatures and objects previously discovered in the world. However, we’ve now learned that this ability was part of a scrapped dungeon-maker feature in Echoes of Wisdom.
In today’s developer blog post, Grezzo’s Satoshi Terada talked about a discarded feature in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – the “dungeon-maker.” He explained that one idea was for Link to be able to duplicate and place items like doors and candles, enabling him to construct unique dungeons. This concept was called an ‘edit dungeon’ because players could effectively design their own Legend of Zelda experience.
Grezzo demonstrated the ability to create dungeons to the series producer, Eiji Aonuma, who proposed that players should be allowed to insert tools and creatures within the game world to assist them during their journey. This idea eventually evolved into the Echo feature, which ultimately replaced the dungeon-building aspect in the final version of the product.
If you’re eagerly anticipating a Zelda-style version of Super Mario Maker, you might find it disheartening to know that a near match was almost created in Echoes of Wisdom. However, instead of being a direct continuation, the foundation of this concept was repurposed to introduce an innovative new feature within the series.
