The Last of Us Season 3 release date window is still far away
HBO CEO Casey Bloys has announced that The Last of Us Season 3 is in the works for a release in 2027. During an interview with Variety, Bloys shared that showrunner Craig Mazin is still debating whether the narrative will span one extensive season or be split into two more installments. As of now, Bloys is letting Mazin take the lead on this decision.
Neil Druckmann, one of the creators behind the series, is no longer involved in the upcoming season. Instead, he’s dedicating his time to his role as head of Naughty Dog and overseeing game development. Hearst executive Carter Bloys acknowledged this change, stating that “Neil is busy making video games and managing Naughty Dog… However, I think he’s laid a solid foundation for the show.” Bloys underscored his confidence in Mazin, referring to him as an experienced professional.
Regarding shifts in characters and main actors, Bloys assured there’s no worry on HBO’s end regarding promoting Season 3. He also mentioned that the title benefits from the video game, and the first two seasons have become quite recognizable by now.
This year’s show garnered a remarkable 16 Emmy nominations, contributing to a historic 142 total nominations for HBO and Max collectively. As the executive expresses, “I’m overjoyed when I consider the HBO team and all the talented artists who decide to collaborate with us, knowing they are being acknowledged in this way.” He emphasized the crucial roles played by key figures such as Francesca Orsi (in drama), Amy Gravitt (in comedy), and Sarah Aubrey (Max Originals).
Bloys declined to specify a more precise timeframe than 2027 for the release, however, he mentioned that preparations for the production are already in motion. With Druckmann’s structural approach and Mazin’s creative guidance, HBO is gearing up to carry on with the adaptation, maintaining a steadfast dedication.
HBO has not announced any casting updates or episode counts for Season 3 at this time.
