Craig Mazin, the mastermind behind “The Last of Us,” has shared insights about the show’s potential future as we approach the season 2 finale airing this Sunday, May 25. Before delving into the horror drama, Mazin had previously collaborated with HBO on the limited series ‘Chernobyl,’ which fetched him two Emmy Awards in the categories of Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Limited Series.

Season 2 is set to unfold events from the highly praised sequel of co-creator Neil Druckmann’s video game, The Last of Us Part II. This season will feature Pedro Pascal portraying Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Additionally, the upcoming season has brought in new cast members for this critically acclaimed horror drama, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Notably, Catherine O’Hara will also be making a special appearance in this series.

The Last of Us creator on how long the series will last

In a recent chat, I found myself pondering over The Last of Us’ ending for its potential third season. To be honest, I’m uncertain if we can tie up all the loose ends satisfactorily in just one more installment. That’s why, it seems to me that we might require a fourth season to give Ellie’s tale a fitting conclusion.

According to Mazin, there’s a good possibility that Season 3 could be longer than Season 2 due to the unique nature of the storyline and the significant impact of Joel’s death. This event has left such a powerful mark that it keeps us tied to it. It seems unlikely that we can divert to tell a separate Bill and Frank story in Season 3. However, for Season 3, we might have more flexibility. But rest assured, the story isn’t going to be wrapped up in a third season. Instead, if we manage to maintain audience interest, we may return for a fourth season to conclude it properly. This appears to be the most likely scenario.
