As a fan who has always admired Dave Bautista’s versatility and dedication, his latest journey into the world of “The Killer’s Game” has left me utterly impressed and somewhat envious! The man’s ability to learn fight choreography on-the-spot during such a hectic production schedule is nothing short of amazing. I mean, can you imagine learning your lines while simultaneously learning how to disarm an opponent? That’s some superhero stuff right there!
Dave Bautista stars in Lionsgate’s recent action-comedy titled “The Killer’s Game“, adapted from Jay Bonansinga’s 1997 novel of the same name. The Guardians of the Galaxy star shared that filming for this project was done under a strict deadline, and he mentioned that he undertook tasks during production that he had never attempted while working on another movie.
Dave Bautista talks The Killer’s Game’s hectic production schedule
At the movie’s grand opening, Bautista talked about the groundbreaking method used to capture the action scenes. Specifically, he highlighted how director JJ Perry and the action team creatively addressed the challenge of filming fight sequences within a tight timeframe.
While conversing with Russ Milheim from The Direct, Bautista revealed that occasionally, he learns the fight choreography on the very same day as filming.
In my opinion, what truly stood out was the manner in which we executed the action. Given the tight schedule for filming this production, we opted to film it in two separate teams simultaneously, with one always engaged in capturing the action… Often, when I needed to bridge the action sequences, it meant quickly learning and performing the choreography, on-the-spot, as if it were happening spontaneously.
Talking about the director, he added:
However, JJ was incredibly well-prepared and knew precisely what was required. Therefore, I’d defer to him, and he would instruct me on the task at hand so smoothly. We’d complete it swiftly, we’d finish it off, and that was it.
He further elaborated how his experience of filming this smaller budget action movie was very different from other bigger projects:
In other projects, I haven’t worked on a film similar to this one because larger productions usually come with greater resources. With more resources comes the ability to invest in more time, additional shooting days, extra crew members, and extended periods for rehearsals and preparation. Unfortunately, we didn’t have those luxuries in this case.
To sum up, he mentioned that the movie’s schedule was “extremely busy” and the entire creation process was “absolutely chaotic”, using the phrase “really challenging” to describe the production experience.
I’m absolutely thrilled to share that Bautista’s newest movie is currently gracing the big screen! In this gripping tale, he masterfully brings Joe Flood, a skilled hitman diagnosed with a fatal illness, to life. With time running short, Joe takes an unexpected turn and sets in motion a plan for his girlfriend to receive his life insurance by putting a hit out on himself.
Initially, it seems that he’s doomed due to a supposed terminal illness. But later, an unexpected revelation surfaces – his condition wasn’t fatal after all; it was mistakenly diagnosed. This twist sets the stage for the film’s intense, John Wick-esque action as Flood is compelled to battle the assassins he once employed, now turned against him as they seek revenge.
