The Killer’s Game Director on Reuniting With Dave Bautista in Afterburn

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for action-packed films, I can’t help but feel exhilarated at the prospect of Dave Bautista gracing our screens once again, this time in J.J. Perry’s upcoming movie, Afterburn. Having had the privilege of witnessing Bautista’s exceptional performance in The Killer’s Game, I can attest to Perry’s sentiments – working with such a talented and genuinely kind individual is an absolute joy.

Director J.J. Perry has previously collaborated with Dave Bautista in the 2024 movie “The Killer’s Game”, and they are going to team up once more for the upcoming project “Afterburn”. According to Perry, it was a delight to have another opportunity to work together on this new film.

In a recent conversation with ComingSoon, Perry shared that the filming of Afterburn is almost complete and also reminisced about the journey that led him to produce this movie.

What did J.J. Perry say about working with Dave Bautista?

Perry shared that they enjoyed the movie The Killers Game, and he mentioned there’s another film or script in the works. Twelve years ago, Perry read Afterburn, and six years ago when Gerard Butler was set to star with Korean director Jung Byung-gil (known for The Villainess), he became involved with it. They met in K-Town, and somehow, it ended up in his hands. He feels grateful for the opportunity, as he knew what to do with it. He’s just finishing that project now and has submitted his director’s cut. Perry is very excited about this one. Perry added that if you don’t have someone like Dave Bautista in your life, you should, as he’s an incredibly generous and intelligent person. Perry can’t say enough good things about him and thinks he’s amazing.

Additionally, Perry shared insights on his association with Bautista and humorously stated, “Everyone would benefit from having a touch of Dave Bautista in their lives,” following their acquaintance.

Dave is truly one of the most formidable individuals I’ve encountered. Despite his tough exterior, he’s as sweet as a pie. It would be beneficial for everyone to have a touch of Dave Bautista in their lives. He’s an exceptional human being, and I hold him dear. However, he is not to be underestimated. Standing tall and powerful, Dave Bautista excels in wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and his fists, though small like a lunchbox, can pack a punch. He’s a giant, and he knows how to deliver a hard hit,” Perry expressed.

In terms of our creative approach, I’ve developed a unique style alongside my trusted action team, including Justin Yu, Felix Betancourt, and Troy Robinson. These individuals have been with me from the start at Day Shift, and they’ve continued to accompany me throughout this entire journey – even as a second unit director for many years. The secret lies in crafting something intriguing for our lead character. What constitutes good choreography? It’s about devising challenges for your protagonist or presenting situations where the protagonist faces a problem and demonstrating how they overcome it, again and again. As the difficulties escalate, we make each challenge increasingly complex to keep audiences engaged.

In the decade following a solar flare that destroyed all technology worldwide, former soldier Jake (played by Bautista), now a treasure hunter, recovers valuable artifacts from the past for influential clients. His upcoming task: join forces with freedom fighter Drea to locate and retrieve the Mona Lisa before an insane warlord does so first.
