The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping – Everything You Need To Know

Suzanne Collins is taking us back to the world of Panem, and the gates of the arena are about to swing open once more. The initial sneak peek for “Dawn of the Reaping” was unveiled on Tuesday, April 1, at CinemaCon after the official book launch on March 18, 2025.

First Official Teaser

The preview doesn’t show any clips from the film, yet it effectively establishes the mood. In it, we find symbols reminiscent of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” the last Hunger Games prequel that chronicles a young President Snow before his ascent to power. Notably, these symbols are depicted as engravings on a token (a small gift) given by Lenore Dove, Haymitch’s girlfriend in the book.

Next, there’s a moment that sent shivers down fans’ spines: we hear Woody Harrelson’s voice saying, “I believe these Games will be unlike any other.” This line is borrowed from “Catching Fire,” but here it functions as a chilling voiceover from the original character actor of Haymitch.

A Second Quarter Quell and Haymitch’s Origin Story

24 years prior to my own participation in the Games, I found myself stepping into the role of protagonist in “Sunrise on the Reaping.” At just 16 years old, I was catapulted into the arena during the 50th Hunger Games, a special event infamously known as the second Quarter Quell.

For any enthusiast of The Hunger Games, it’s common knowledge that the Quarter Quell has a unique twist. In this instance, the twist is particularly shocking – not only 24 tributes, but 48! That’s four from each district. This means more bloodshed and cruelty than ever before, surpassing anything we’ve witnessed so far.

The book delves into the complete account of Haymitch’s participation in the Games, starting on his birthday, which is also the day of the reaping. It reveals why he transformed into the jaded, heavy-drinking mentor we encounter much later in the initial trilogy. His wounds run profound – the book doesn’t mince words in portraying the origins of his suffering.

New and Old Character, Big Emotions

We encounter new characters such as Haymitch’s girlfriend Lenore Dove, his family, and a number of other tributes who fight alongside him. Some of these characters have gained popularity due to their engaging dialogues in the novel (Maysilee Donner is one that particularly stands out), while others are memorable because of their emotional background stories.

Moreover, “Sunrise on the Reaping” delved deeper into the backstories of established characters. Characters like a young Effie Trinket, Beete, Wiress, Mags, and even an early version of Plutarch Heavensbee were introduced.

Among the most intriguing revelations? It turns out that Haymitch’s closest companion is none other than Katniss Everdeen’s father. Yes, you heard it right – the character we barely knew in the initial films takes on a significant role in Haymitch’s personal life. Additionally, there are hints about Peeta’s parents and brief glimpses of Katniss’s mother before her husband’s demise shattered her spirit. These minor details serve as a connection between past and present, enriching the Hunger Games universe, much to the delight of fans. The narrative is gritty and emotionally wrenching.

What We Know About The Movie So Far

Currently, there isn’t much to report regarding the cast, but fans are eagerly speculating and suggesting potential choices for young Haymitch, such as Mike Faist. The casting process is underway, with filming scheduled to start in July 2025. The movie will hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Billy Ray is responsible for the screenplay, having previously co-written the first Hunger Games film in 2012.

‘THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING’ will begin filming in July.
